Okay so the boot is mouldy and smells. It's obviously damp. I thought it was coming from the rear end of the roof where it meets the boot however that is bone dry. Phew.

But on further investigation whilst stripping out the u/s 6 CD changer I discovered rust and a pool of water directly underneath where the aerial is sited in the back pax panel as first photo below. Any ideas what the black plastic box is. It's welded to the panel

What model is your car? My 98 2.8 doesn't have anything there.

Stick that part number into google or REALOEM.com and it will bring it up.
Must be some sort of module that certainly doesn't want to be getting wet!!

@Firefox116 The white plastic module is the tilt sensor for the alarm and the black bit is the breather. There are two thin rubber flaps in it which push out to allow air from inside the boot to vent outside.
I thinks it is screwed on from the outside and can be seen with the arch liner removed or the bumper off.

part 7?

PS there is a drain plug in the bottom of the well which can be pushed out to allow the water to drain out.

Brian - that now explains why the alarm has been playing up !! That sensor is getting wet.

Great help thank you. I'll have a look underneath the wheel arch lining.

Thank you.

@Firefox116 hope you get sorted. Could you do me a favour as our tilt alarm is playing up as well. Could you take a photo of the connector to the tilt sensor as one of the wires on mine has corroded and I'm not sure which it goes back into. I have the new connector and pins but unsure which to put them into.
Thanks.

Sorry best photo I could get. I can't disconnect the wiring loom from the tilt sensor. I'll try again tomorrow
