Was chatting about my Z3 today and.......

was talking to a guy today and telling him how I love the zed etc etc, as you do...

And he asked what engine it was, I replied with the standard reply, 2 Litre straight six, to this he quickly replied with,,,,

"Oh no, get that out and get a 2.8 in it, it's a straight exchange, nothing needed and cheap to do"

Is this true, ? A straight and simple exchange with nothing needed ??

Thought it would have needed other stuff to be done like exhaust and possibly engine mounts etc..

Well I guess it all comes down to how handy you are, but to me an engine swap doesn't exactly sound like a weekend job...

It's not like changing batteries in a radio. Have a look in this forum and you will see how much work is actually involved. What your friend probably means is that you don't have to do a lot of mechanical re-engineering to get it to fit. BTW once you get the engine out you will want to ensure the donor engine has all the perishable items replaced while you have it on a stand. Consider - unless your 2.0 blows up and has to be replaced it may not be worth all the effort and expense .... might as well sell it and get the 2.8 or 3.0 well that's my opinion. I sold my 2.2i and got the 3.0i and could not be happier.

Fair bit more involved than that. A fun project if you have the ability and large pockets, but I'd need a bigger return on power than 40ish bhp...

The 2l is not that far behind a 2.8 as long as its running perfectly, I have gone through the same thoughts as you and almost bought a 3.0l engine to do a swap,

During a meeting I had years ago(when I was young) in France with the Italian Z3Roadster.it Club two guys started dicking around up on the hairpins that lead to the Col de Turini, one with a Facelift 2.8 and another with a 2.0 and indeed the 2.8 couldn't quite pull away, so I second those who say it's not worth it.

I've had a few outings in my 2.8 with @Sean d in his 2.0 and on the road there is nothing in it,admittedly Sean may be revving his a bit higher through the gears than I need to but maybe that just adds to fun of the 2.0. Just how I see it .

Yes mate the 2.0l has to be driven hard and it needs to be at 6000 - 6500 rpm when changing gear to keep it on the power band

My m43 only 118 bhp and can be a bit lacklustre at times if you try to push it too much better just cruise along take in tbe world

the list goes on and on. Does it need a stronger gearbox? Is the propshaft the same length? Do you have the same diff ratio?

Not worth it unless you want to just prove that it can be done.


Swapping an engine in a "modern" car is not like swapping an engine in an Issigonis Mini

No bashing from me either, but my M44 did the job and was more chuckable than a straight six.
Ask @TaffZee, he has own'd both.......

The racing team that Stacey advertises on here only run M44's.
