just to keep people legal, please remember that PMR 446 radios are only legal to use without an OfCom issued licence if their power output is limited to 0.5Watts

a 5Watt radio is a commercial product requiring a licence.

The Motorola claim of 10km on 0.5watts is rather optimistic and would rely on perfect conditions including terain, air temperature and humidity, lack of other RF interference.

2-3km is more realistic using licence free PMR446.

Oh, and you'll probably want to start calling them "drivie talkies".

Smart arse as it turns out two way radios are excluded from the The Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) (Amendment) (No. 4) Regulations 2003 that covers the use of hand held devices, who knew? So using hand held radios when driving are in fact fully legal

Certainly worth a try, wish I still had the ones we bought in the states 15 years ago, they were amazing, only little but we kept in touch with the kids all over disney and other parks over there, plus used them here once we came home, great distance on them, they were Motorola.
