I'm getting fed up of driving round to the constant theme tune of the viscous fan roar so considering removing it.

Does anyone know what size spanner I need to remove the bolt - biggest I have is 22 and that's nowhere near?

1 1/4” or metric equivalent. LHT by the way.

Tony.

As @t-tony said - but why is it constantly engaged?

If you don't have the correct size you can buy a viscous fan removal tool off ebay, I paid £7 for the two pieces, I knew I'd only use it twice, 'hopefully', once to release the fan coupling, then again to nip the new one up but it was worth it.

They are quite awkward to release.

Usually run constantly when they’re knackered!

Tony.

Once you have got it off all you need to do is replace the coupling, available from ECP.
That is for the 3.0 but I am sure the 2.8 is the same.

When purchasing a new Viscous coupling make sure you purchase a recognised brand, Behr Hella, MEYLE, Febi, avoid unknown 'German sounding' brands,

Try Quarry Motors, they are on your doorstep, ask to speak to Lewis, tell him John from MEYLE recommended him, not only will they have the part they are a very good BMW specialist, They are in Rutland Street S3. Check their reviews.

Hope to find out following removal but could wel be beyond my capability - in which case I'll take it to my mechanic before next summer.
It should turn freely when engine stopped - also what happens to your engine temp when it is running?

To be honest I wasn't planning on replacing it immediately - relying instead on the other fan that's fitted.
