It is both. There ore large O rings under these flat type gasket rings. Perhaps they are scraper rings.

It should make a difference if oil pressure is not maintained as designed as the vanos will change the cam position. Oil leaks equals cam position inefficiency . That's why the engineers out it in the car.

In a few days I can let you know if it makes a difference to fuel efficiency as I keep meticulous records. So far it is looking good. The car pulls like a team of oxen however it was a neck breaker before I rebut the vanos. !

Perfect and I can see why the confusion was there.

The above kit is all you need to do the job however some kits also include a few other minor parts such as new plastic plugs which sit inside the vanos and new vanos left hand thread screws [x2] one of which I broke and hence the thread. The large silver washers above are new crush washers for the vanos oil line feed [19mm]. The kit I got also had the new metal gaskets that are under the 10 screws as shown in the picture. {I supplied this info for people that might read this thread in the future}.

I noticed a slow improvement over the course of about a 100 miles with nothing to start with and it was not until about 50 miles had passed that I noticed the extra torque lower down, I guess they new rings need to properly bed in or something like that or maybe the ECU has to "learn" the new things the car is doing :)
