With renewed thanks to all those Z- ers who responded. Here's an update: the RAC man told me he recovers roughly a car a week. The garage that sorted it the same. there is a national plague and it's getting worse. You've been warned....

The scum bags like older, original systems (even 24 years and 101k miles old in my case), as they have larger quantities of the precious metals than their modern counterparts. Also they're not too keen on pattern versions as they, too, are light on the metals they want.

The cats were out of stock at BMW so I resorted to try and find a decent pattern version - of which they are quite a few. Full marks to Brooklands Auto Centre at Telford who not only sourced a pattern system, but had it fitted within 24 hours of my call - and drilled-out and replaced a broken stud on the manifold. All for £536 including VAT and 12 months warranty. I shouldn't have had to do it in the first place, but here's the thing: it sounds better and goes that bit better! All we need now is some dry weather to get the roof down....

£536 + VAT is never a good ending but at least you have one and much heaper than OEM.

I had the cat cut from my Honda Accord last Christmas. It cost me over £1k to replace the whole system plus the oxy and lambda sensors as they just butchered my car to get the cat out.
