Under bonnet paint

Under bonnet paint! Looks like it was whatever they had got. My 2002 Topaz was a basic 1.9 , but had 'matt' black underneath, under bonnet and in the boot. Guess it was the base coat colour ?

Was it basic? Did you ever look it up on BMWVIN? It may have come with an individual colour roof which was replaced before you got it?

I've not seen a black under bonnet car before (unless the exterior was black) when it hasn't been an individual options car. But I guess it's just possible at the very end of the production run in 2002 there may have been some weirdness going on. I know a batch of Sports were built with wood effect centre consoles rather than brushed aluminium right at the end of production.

Your colour label will tell you the top coat and under bonnet colour

this is mine, clearly says Titanium silver & Artic Silver,
Artic Silver (matt version) is the under bonnet paint.

The paint is more satin not matt.

But where do you get Artic Silver satin or for that matter matt or even gloss from? All you can buy off the shelf is Artic Silver metallic base coat.

That's why you need to go to an auto paint supplier. And to have it matched to your specific car just like you would if it was an external panel. Not sure what else to say really. I've done the job myself and spent quite a while researching it and that was the only way to get a proper match. With the only point of note being for all the trouble it involved I went with a gloss effect not satin to give more of an impact. Even with the different finish the colour was such a good match that where I blended it into the existing paint at the bulkhead you can barely see the transition.

If the OP just wants something that will do then use a can of Halfords off the shelf Topaz Blue metallic base coat. Perhaps the main requirement is to remove the rust and a minor colour/finish variation doesn't matter.

OK Rob, I wasn't and am not disagreeing, satin, matt I dont give a hoot tbh
I was just trying to help with paint codes not suppliers, I've only needed top coat.

Thanks everyone for your info, just as I thought that the mist had cleared its gone thick again Yes my local paint supplier will be next call.
