Hey all,
so as you may have read from my previous thread I have just purchased a 2001 2.2i Sport Auto Z3 with an Automatic Gearbox. The car is in need of a service and it came with very little in the way of service history so I am unsure what has been done in the past. I don't want to make the assumption that it has been serviced in line with BMW recommended intervals so what I plan to do is get everything it could possibly need done and start with a 100% serviced vehicle. I have done a deal with my mechanic that he will do the servicing work and some other jobs in exchange for my old 98 Z3 so I want to make sure I maximise the amount of work.

With that in mind could you guys suggest what should be done? I tried looking for an exhaustive list but gave up after seeing nothing but adverts on Google!

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

I bought mine used as well, it had about 89K miles on the clock, I am now up to about 116K happy miles.
When I bought mine, I changed every fluid that could be changed, engine oil, transmission oil, differential oil and brake fluid. I also flushed the radiator and even the windshield cleaner fluid.
After that I had a friend put it on a lift and we inspected the undercarriage and brakes and all that, pulled the wheels balanced them as well.
When you buy a used car, you need to start on it like its never been serviced, this catches you up on whats going on with your new toy.
Anyway, that's my 2 bits!

I would replace the water pump and thermostat. Viscous fan and drive belts if needs be too.

And for the long term sake of the car, have the sill covers off, clean up the ton of debris you'll find inside and rust-proof.

Gearbox oil
Diff Oil
PAS Fluid
Brake Fluid
Pads and Discs all round
fuel filter
coolant drain, flush and replace
water pump
thermostat
belts

new wipers
full inspection of all rubber bushes and replacement if necessary.

if you are swapping for a car you need to be getting at least £2000 worth of work out of him ... anything less and he's having you over

Thanks all, have definitely decided to do most of the above. A few follow up questions though:

Assuming standard equipment being in place for a 2.2i Sport Auto what upgrades would you suggest when replacing things like brakes, water pump, filters, wipers etc?

As much info as possible would be hugely appreciated. I could just trust my mechanic to choose the right parts but with a forum of like minded experts I'd say you will have better suggestions. Any suppliers in the U.K. Or Ireland would be appreciated.

I'm not sure you need any what I would call upgrades for those parts. I would just buy good quality like Mann filters and Bosch Aerotwin wipers.

Thanks for all that, think £2,000 might be a bit steep, Z3's arent making big money over here lately.
