I've seen what happens when one of these encounters an illegaly parked Mercedes outside a tank gate. Messy.
 
Reminds me of Ross Noble's story on Top Gear about taking delivery of his tank. He lives in the countryside and was driving ahead of the tank when he encountered an old fella on a narrow lane who refused to reverse back up the lane. That was until the tank came into view 😆

Long long time ago I got the opportunity to do a short drive in a chieftain tank. "Giz a go" is what I said. So he did.

I got my 'H' licence in a 432. We had them kitted out as mobile computer room. The 'operator' would key stuff in but didn't have an enter key to commit the data. The commander had a thing in his hand with the 'Enter' button. The idea being that if the operator wanted to send a shell off into the distance it needed an officer - who was less qualified than the operator - to press the enter button to make it so. We called the officers "Ruperts".

I was the driver. Tea maker and the one who'd "Switch it off and back on again" if the system froze. This was achieved by turning round in my seat and delivering a well aimed boot at a box just to the back right of the driver's seat. I wonder if that's where the phrase "ReBoot" came from. As in "Driver, ReBoot the system!"

Hohne ranges. One day we'd thrown a track. Our Rupert musta thought we were in a tank so demanded that we do a 180 on the spot which a 432 can't do. Anyway it's usually quite easy to 'unthrow' a track by reversing back in to it as long as it's still partly on the sprocket. But our Rupert was pals with the REME Rupert so they decided to pull up alongside in their 434 and do an engine lift coz their guys had never done one in the field before and they wanted something to play with. Anyway. We put the kettle on while the fitters went at it. Many, many cuppas later they still hadn't lifted the pack out - some bolt or other hadn't been undone and they were trying to lift our whole vehicle.

Speaking of screaming. Shirls late dad had an ex army Albion 6 x 4 for recovery. We went out one evening to winch a stuck bulldozer at Blyton.
As we set off Reg handed me some ear defenders, "You'll need these" he said and he wasn't wrong. The gearbox screamed its head off.
He also told me that "In one of these you can go a long way, . . . . . . . in a long time!" He wasn't wrong.
