Tyre Sealant Recommendations

The dreaded run flats are finally going on Tuesday to be replaced with Goodyear Eagle Asymmetric 5's.

As we already have a decent 12v tyre inflator, what tyre sealant would you recommend if we were forced to use it?

I've used Holts Tyre weld successfully on at least 3 occasions. Once for a full on puncture - on a run flat, don't believe the car handles well enough with run flats after a puncture, it was rubbish. That tyre obviously replaced. And twice to seal slow leaks on the rim and those tyres remain air tight and in use 2 years later. It even partially re-inflates the tyre for you to get to a garage. Magic stuff!

It comes in 2 sizes. So get the correct one. Often half price.

The other approach is to have a proper treatment done to give you a full inner sealant layer like Continental Contiseals. Either DIY or there's a few agents around who will come and do it for you. I've not tried this before buy used to have Contiseals and they work. There's a demo video for the retro-fit stuff showing an air gun being fired into a treated tyre. It actually increases the tyre pressure as air is sucked in!

I carry Tyre Weld Keith. As Rob says it will partially reinflate the tyre but you will need a 12v compressor of one sort or another to fuly inflate it. Get the larger tyre size can though.

I always carry Slime in mine. Write ups are very good. and I have used it successfully but not on the zeds

Top Tip (and yes I have used it)
Carry a few flexible plastic golf tees in the car If you get a small puncture such as a nail / screw, find the hole and push the tee into it then roll the car forward to push the tee right into the hole then inflate. That will hold as a plug to get you to a tyre shop, the plus of this is you wont have automatically written the tyre off as liquid repairs do.

NB: I actually drove around on this repair for 3 weeks without any loss of tyre pressure, the tyre fitter was well impressed and said it was a first for him.

Same with run-flats which can also be repaired.

Absolutely correct. The only reason Tyreweld and such are said to make tyres irreparable is because tyre houses do not (generally) have equipment to clean the inside of the tyre.

That is correct and they usually will refuse to clean and repair it (in my experience)

In all honesty most punctures I've had have been unrepairable because of the location being to close to the shoulder.

No mention of that in the MOT Testers manual either, or the one about two repairs too close together or too many repairs in one tyre. There are lots of myths surrounding tyres.

My friend, who runs the local garage, got a screw in his BMW X5 tyre when it was quite new. He took it out and replaced it with a self tapper. It stayed there for thousands of miles until the tread wore down to the screw head.

Which is why the advice is not to remove foreign objects (if they are securely embedded in the tyre) before seeking a repair. I believe similar advice applies to if you impale yourself or have a knife stuck in you - don't remove it because it could cause more blood to flow out (and more damage removing it).
