Turkey (The country)

Few places are entirely safe nowadays sadly. You can get caught up in something at any time almost anywhere. Turkey (like France!) is getting more problems than you can accept at the moment.

Portugal especially the western end of the algarve away from the more commercialised tourist areas is good. Canary Islands will still be warm in October. Depends what you want to do when you get there - sit in the sun and/or bar or do stuff?

It's a tough call for us Ian. We're going to have to find more money as the apartment in Turkey belongs to a friend which made it affordable for us. We are definitely going somewhere but it's finding what you afford that's not skeggy blanca! We've been to all the canaries over the years and yep they are always safe and the weather is superb later in the year. Last time we went it was awful, so many places boarded up as they can't stand up to the all inclusive hotels. It was a run down mess and we didn't enjoy it at all. That said, you can't judge it all by one experience.
Totally agree with what your saying about safety. As most on here know we visit France whenever we can and they are suffering terribly to these idiots at the moment and it wouldn't stop us going. The trouble in Turkey tho isn't an isolated incident but country wide. I can see civil war kicking of there before much longer. 3000 army now arrested and how many have familys which will disagree with there actions? Ticking time bomb.
We have visited muslim countries and had great holidays but we don't wish to holiday in them at the moment. Watch this space, we will end up in Gran Canaria!

Hope you find a holiday that suits you both @Grumpy :p
It's very hard to know where to go these days :)
Good luck ;)

Dave when in October are you going ?
We usually go to Cala Bona/Cala Millor in the first 2 weeks. Everything is open but not a great influx of tourists as they now have a closed season and completely shut down end of October this is because Thompson decided to pull their flights over the winter.
They have a nice promenade that goes for about 2 miles with bars and restaurants on one side and the sea and beaches on the other.
This is the part of the Cala Bona Prom this then leeds onto Cala Millor which has an abundance of bars.

You also Have an Harbour at Cala Bona with restaurants.

You can also go on a trip upto Valdamosa and visit the old church

You can get very cheap flights and also excellent accommodation at that time of year that would otherwise be very expensive.
You can also catch a cat from the Harbour to the Port of Christo and visit the caves of Drax

The Turkey situation is an odd one. This coup attempt was to divert the country back to a more secular state and away from the influences of religion. I'm sure the west agrees with the sentiment but cannot ever agree with the means. The world becomes ever more polarised and we have far fewer places where we can go and feel safe. Where we can go will get massively more expensive because of the demand. That's progress?
Get used to Ingolmells - it might be the only option.
:(

Thanks mate. We were down to fly out on the 11th. Looks lovely. Will have a look at it.

Only thing is if you go to the Northern end then do a private transfer as the shuttle takes about 1 n a half hours for a 40 min drive

I think that is almost the week before they shut down so will be nice and quiet.

A quick look at flights Ryanair approx £300 for 2 people with seats and 15k allowance for both.
4 star Marins Player Hotel £273 so approx 600 for a 4 star 1 week stay

recommend Menorca
also Cape Verde but longer flight though.

worked in both Egypt and Tunisia before the Troubles and even back then I decided I'd never take my family there.

That's good value mate. What board basis is that?

Self catering but think you can choose dif options. Have a look on trav rep and there are various rates

Did Tunisia a few years back and enjoyed it. Wouldn't got now tho unfortunately. Cape Verde is a bit far for a winter week really for us but thanks for the suggestions.

Had a quick look and can get b n b and half board at 3 star for around 350 total so around 650 for you and jue including flights

Dave, October is a long way off at the mo. I would think it will all be sorted by then. but it it plays on Jue mind its not worth it.
I would try one of the greek Islands

We went to Menorca some years ago beautiful green island, but IIRC seasonal and October was right at the end.Stayed at the Hotel San Valentin at Sanbou. Very nice place.

Tony.

I totally agree Pete. I'd go happily if all calms in the coming weeks but Jue and the in-laws won't go now unfortunately.
