Guys
I have to swap the wheels on our new purchase. I don’t want to risk the factory jacking points until they have a much closer inspection, so can anyone advise the alternative places to put a trolley jack?
Many thanks.
(I did do a search but couldn’t find anything)

If the jacking points under the sills won’t support your car John it’s ready for the scrap yard. Honestly. If you still don’t want to use them you might want to run a wheel onto a bit of 2” timber so you can get a jack further under to the front lower arm rear mountings and at the rear under the Diff. (piece of wood on the jack plate is a good idea).

Tony.

ps. It will get jacked on the sill points at MOT time!

Cheers Tony. I'm hoping that the points AREN'T rotten but they were all advisories in August so didnt want to take any risks until I've inspected properly. So rear lower arm mounts and diff. Got it.

When you are satisfied about the condition of the jacking points get yourself a couple of ice hocky pucks and cut them down so an oblong fits the recess of the jacking points and use them as a cushion for a low profile trolly jack to lift the car. You are probably going to find the underside of the plastic jacking point insert is rusty, it should clean up, put some rust treatment on them then paint with a good metal paint, refit the plastic insert and keep the underside clean in the future. Might be worthwhile taking the outer sill off so you can have a good look at the inner sills and give them some treatment, will give you better access to the jacking points to clean up the area.

My advice would not to refit the jacking points once that work has been carried as you will be creating the same issue that caused the pproblem in the first place as its the plastic insert that traps all the crap that holds the water, I carry one in my boot and use it when I need to jack the car up

That certainly makes good sense to me Sean.

Re jacking on the diff - I know it’s commonplace but I’m sure I read on here on he binmerforums that it contributes/causes the boot floor weld issues.
What do we say?

You will get a jacking point advisory just for the presence of surface rust.

I would jack the rear under the axle beam. Well I always do with no issue. Front under engine cradle. But I do have a big jack.

What mrscalex said.

Also you can get jack pucks for just about anything cheaply off the bay.
I have a bmw rectangular one for the Z and my wife's e82, a spare in the back of the e82, a round one for my son's e36 and another with a chunk out for my Clio and Ignis. Wonderful little things.
