Well, after digging into mine a little further, it is a typical clutch LSD. I was reading elsewhere that the "R" on the tag meant Torsen, but not the case here. I tore mine apart and the friction plates are as smooth as glass which is why it was acting as an open carrier.

The oiling holes on the 168mm small case LSD look a little different than the one in the 188mm case as pictured a couple of times in this thread.
