Ok I'm totally confused now about what oil I use to change out on the manual transmission and the differential gear box . I have a 1996 Z3 1.9L roadster without limited slip . I did get under the car and saw the label on the transmission box that said "ATF" ./ The more I read about what oil to use the more I get confused , Whats the difference between GL4 and GL5 and what do I need ? I was going to use Mobil 1 synthetic 75w-90 for the differential and Redline D4 ATF synthetic for the manual Trans . , now I'm not sure

You are spot on correct with your selection.

GL4 in the transmission
GL5 in the diff

I've put Redline 75W-90 into two Z3 diff's now and am very impressed with the noise reduction.

Put Redline D4 ATF into the Getrag 220 manual gear box in the 2.0 L Z3 and am equally impressed.

Will Redline 75w-90 diff oil effect the diff on a 3.0i as they all have 25% lsd fitted. If not how much quieter did it make the diff.

Not all the gearbox's use atf depends on the sticker on the box .
@Howard as far as i know your lsd diff uses a different oil from non lsd diff

Hi Howard

There are three different type of diffs used in the Z3:
- open
- torsen LSD
- clutch pack LSD

Check out the attached photo so you can tell them apart (not my photo). You can remove the fill plug and insert an inspection camera to check your diff type.

My research came up with:
- 75W-90 for open and Torsen diffs
- 75W-110 for clutch LSD with street duty
- 75W-140 for Clutch LSD with heavy street and track duty

My 2.0 L Z3 has an open diff and has Redline 75W-90 oil. I no longer hear any diff whine.
My 3.0 L Z3 has a clutch pack LSD. It has light street usage. As 75W-110 is not available in my part of the South Pacific, I've used 75W-90. Good noise reduction for diff whine.

Hope this helps

...Used the castrol syntrans for the gearbox change.
I used Titan Sintofluid SAE 75W-80 in the gearbox and if I'm truly honest I couldn't tell any difference when I did mine. Peace of mind they've been changed though;)
All from OPIE Oils.

Hi Murray, thanks for the reply.
So my Z3 3.0i (2001 model) is listing a 25% differential lock (S209) as being fitted, am I correct that this is a Torsen diff fitted and it should be running on 75W-90 oil. Am I correct that it's only the Z3Ms that have a full lsd?

Hi Guys, I think the confusion that I'm suffering with ( on holiday in Jamaica ) maybe caused by the sun & copious amounts of spiced rums!!
So some Z3 (mainly 1.9) have the open diff, most Z3s (2.2,2.8 & all 3.0) have a torsen diff & all M series have a full LSD (basket) diff. So the only diff here requiring the 75w-140 oil is the M series, the other 2 can run on 75w-90. But it seems many of you just use the 75w-140 anyway with out any problems.
I prehsum all cars fitted with the Torsen diff have the dynamic stability control system fitted.
Sorry to prattle on, another rum & coke has appeared!

Hey Guys. Hope it is okay that I kept this thread alive without starting a new one.

I am a little confused on the exact diff type in my new-to-me 1996 Z3 1.9. I am tracking down the dreaded 1st/2nd gear clunk and found my diff mount bushing had more play in than I liked. I ended up replacing it and took the diff cover off in the process for ease. Now that I can see the diff internals, I was expecting to see an open carrier............but it looks more like a clutch LSD..............but is acting like an open. I have attached a pic of what it looks like. The bolt tag is "R 345V2541. I can grab each output flange and easily spin them opposite directions, and if I hold one output shaft and spin the input, the output I am holding is easy to hold still and the other output spins easily with the input. Could it be a LSD with totally shot clutches?

I just need to make sure I get the proper fluid in it before reassembly. I am waiting on a new gasket at this point.

Thanks
