I suppose I could make up a frame perfect for that one jib. But I'd rather have a workbench maybe with shelf underneath or even drawers for tools etc.

Talking of tool boxes. Those wheeled toolboxes with drawers etx. How strong are they.

I'll google a few and read specs but anyone have recommendations

Toolboxes depends on make and what your putting in it.
Seen a guy at work ben the frame on a Halfords Advanced tool box probably just with the combined weight.

I built this over Christmas break many years ago. Several incarnations later it now looks like this. But, initially it was made to place under a lift to lower complete engine/gearbox units out of vehicles and wheel them away.

Thanks @t-tony i was just about to post that I was thinking your idea of a custom frame might be better after all. I don't have a big workshop though and I still fancy a good tool-box-on-wheels. But for dropping the back end I might just drop it onto a couple of pallets. Or take it out a bit at a time.

I actually got a cheapo toolbox from Jeff Bezo's corner shop.

Wasn't expecting it to be up to much, but it is actually really, really good, and even better than the old ones I had had from Machine Mart or Halfords before.

The drawers are smooth, there are lots of them, and they hold some very heavy stuff too and fully extend on ball bearing sliders.

You can get red, black or yellow.

Also I got one of these mid-rise scissor lifts, and it is brilliant (though not particularly cheap)
Clear access to the wheels, suspension and the full centre of the car underneath.

Is that an Automotech lift Pete? looks identical to mine, apart from the colour that is.

I will be interested to hear what you think of it. I really NEED a car lift. There are so many to choose from nowadays at varying prices.
I love it. No. Seriously. It's great. I don't know how I ever managed without it. Car's up there now while I finish off the wheel arch liners and paint the sills.

One thing though is that even the standard height z3 is quite low and I have 1" thick planks that I drive on to raise the car just enough to swing the arms out. I've just fitted slightly lower suspension and the front axle needs another inch. Looking at other people's lifts in action though I see they're also using various planks.

At first I was considering one of those tilt lifts. I spoke to the manufacturer and he said that they're not supposed to lift the car in the centre and have the car see-sawing on the lift. It's supposed to be all at the front or all at the rear of the sill so the other axle is fully on the ground. That statement was weird considering their own advert showed a car lifted straight up - see-sawing on the lift.

Anyway - in the end it was the price of the lifttech that sold it to me. 1200 I think it was at the time.

Be aware that it's HEAVY. Not something you can kick around with your foot.

edit - forgot to mention the circuit breaker in your fusebox consumer - assuming your garage consumer unit is on a fused spur - needs to be bigger. The 13amp fuse in the lift's 3 pin plug is OK but my 16A circuit breaker in the consumer unit kept tripping. Can't remember what I have now. 20A I think. It's just the initial spike when you press the button to lift. If your socket is on the 30A ring main it should be OK.

Nothing wrong with using an old thread if your question refers to something in the old thread.

I don't know why people are so against using old threads - it's the old thread's that google knows about and which often bring people to the forum.

My intention when starting this thread was for people to add to it in future and where to look if you're looking for a tool to avoid

I need something that will work reliably on less than 13 amps. I only have a 16 amp supply to my garage and not able (without digging half the garden up and knocking half the house about) to get a bigger supply. Cheapskate developers for you. I had a 40 amp supply in my old garage but that is no use to me now!
