It's a nice place to live - bit flat but some excellent driving roads on the doorstep as you can be on the North York Moors in under an hour.

Welcome :)

Had 2 of each now, but I'm definitely a Z4 owner now! The 3's are great, bit more seat of your pants. The Z4 however is just all round better, but can feel a little bland in comparison.

I did see the silver one but I'd like something with the bigger engine. My daily driver is a 3 litre (albeit diesel) and I think I'd miss the oommpphhh with a 2 litre car. I've always had lead driving boots.
Two 3L cars is the way to go

I've seen this lovely 2.2 and whilst I wanted a 3.0, this is only 20 miles away, so may warrant a look. Private seller asking dealer price but it looks pretty special with the lotus leather

Hello and welcome. I have a 1999 Z3 2.8 and over the last 3 years have replaced much of the suspension, overhaulled the brakes and cooling system as well as replacing sill cover panels, front wings and the roof. Much of this is typical of the work required on a Z3 that's 19 years old. There is plenty of information on here about doing those jobs. Even if you don’t feel the urge to handle the spanners, it's good to understand what needs to be done.
The 2.2 you saw certainly looks nice with an unusual spec. Price to me looks a bit on the high side from a private seller without any warranty. You would either need to make sure it is very good or offer less to cover potential work required (£1k in the back pocket would be nice).
Your preference for a 3 litre is understandable, but bear in mind that they are much rarer than 2.2s and the older 2.8s and as such are attracting quite a premium. I would expect a 3 litre with a similar mileage and spec to the 2.2 to have an asking price nearer £10k, if not higher at a dealer.
In terms performance the power output for 3 v 2.2 is 231 v 170bhp; torque 300 v 210Nm: fuel consumption will be similar. To me the torque is most important if you like to feel the "shove in the back". Thats not to say the 2.2 is slow, more the 3 will have more in reserve.
There are quite a frew members in your area and perhaps talking with them and looking at a few cars would be helpful to you.
Bear in mind that "spring fever" will start to see prices for convertibles climb in the next month or so.
It has been said that the Z3 was one of the last which could be worked on by the owner. Perhaps not true but they are simpler (less sophisticated) than a Z4, which is reflected in the character of the car.
Enjoy searching for the right car; then enjoy using it and being involved with the Z community.

Hi and welcome from Surrey, as a 3.0 owner I am biased but I certainly wouldn't mind a 2.2, on most roads they are a good match. That one in your ad looks great but it is a high price, worth haggling. :welcome:

Hi @Redline, notice you have disagreed with my post. That's fine, but it would help to know which part you take issue with.

Probably this bit I guess?

I'm not really sure that is accurate having owned both. My Z4 is only 3 years newer than my Z3 and I don't find a big difference when it comes to repairing them.
Certainly good advice given regarding getting out there and meeting owners before you commit either way. For instance I'm only an hour from Beverly so if you would like to have a close up look at my Z4 give me a shout.

Tony.

Thanks for the input @t-tony.
You certainly have the advantage of knowledge having owned both and of course being a professional mechanic.
@JuZZer this is an offer you should certainly take up if you possibly can.

Would second having a look at @Si 3.0si Z4 also has 265 bhp and it is cheaper than any 3.0 Z3 you will find. It is also in one of the rearest Colour combos out there
