Time for new suspension me thinks!

It spent today being checked over by my local garage, I told them the main area's to look at .
they found nothing. I am now thinking it's just the way these cars handle, perhaps I was expecting too much from what is basically a car designed 25 years ago.
Or perhaps it's the tires it doesn't like
.

How old is the car and what is the mileage?

I doubt everything is 'fine' as per your garage. That's a fair bit of mileage and 17yrs on the suspension,

My car passed MOT's fine and had totally knackered rear beam bushes that a regular garage couldn't pick up on. Worth going somewhere that knows BMW.

What tyres size and make tyres does it have and what age are they? Could be supervise by them being the wrong way round or really old as its a low miler.
I know of its obvious but are the pressures correct?

And what sort of speeds are we talking about? Even when new the Z was not a planted car at a 100+, much more fidgety than the e36 of the time for example.

Mike,

They are super susceptible to tyres, I've got a few BMW's and they all the same like women.. fickle.

Also check your date codes on the tyres, matching sets rather than odd ones etc.. anything older than 6 years is considered scrap.

My car passed its MOT with 1 very worn ball joints outer ball joint (no splits in the rubber boot), but it felt vague at the front end - I replaced both and its noticeable how much better it feels at speed.

Garages tend to check for things like leaks and splits in boots not performance level. If you suspect a shock I'd recommend that you take it off and test it, they are gas pressurised and that may be long gone.

Hope you get it fixed soon, the e36 platform is very good rest assured.

I changed the front tyres to Falkens 225 50 16 as a lot recommend them for Zeds.
There ok but can't say I am overly impressed with them.
As said above and others have said i think it's the character of the car.
Especially if you have been driving more model cars you tend to notice it.
You just can't keep spending money trying to get it perfect which may never happen
I don't mind replacing worn or broken parts.
My diff powerflex bush will be my last suspension outlay when I can find a garage to fit it.
Tracy.

it is fitted with Fortuna F2000 all round, at the correct pressures. It appears that the car failed it's MOT a couple of years ago due to perished and cracked tires. So it would seem that these were fitted a couple of years ago, they look like new but that would be expected as the MOT's show it has only done 1660 miles in those two years. I have no experience of these tires so I don't know how good they are.

Dino D it began to feel like it was floating at just over 100, so it may well be ok and that is just how they are.

I do however get a little shake at just over 80 so I think I will look to have them re-balanced, it stopped shaking at about 90 so probably a balance problem. May have lost a weight.

Apart from feeling a little "floaty" above 100 in feels very well planted in the twisties, apart from feeling very "heavy". However since my daily driver is a VW Up! anything will feel heavy lol.

The main reason I was thinking "shocks" was simply due to the fact that they may look good, but without removing them you just can't tell how well they are actually working. By the time you have removed them you may just as well fit new ones anyway IMHO.

Like I said, perhaps I was expecting a little too much from what is basically a car designed 25 years ago. Cars and motorbikes have moved on so much it's unbelievable, I mean I have 150 BHP form a 2.0 sport car, hell, grannies go shopping in cars with 150 bhp these days lol.

@Mike Trident Did a full OEM suspension change on my 2.8, totally transformed the car.

Thos tyres won't be helping at those speeds... BMW are sensitive to tyres, Michelin PSS/PS2 are the best at the high end. Vredstein work well at the mid range end.

Agree I put Michelin PPS all round on the 2.8 gave great confidence.
