Ticking noise

Hi All hopefully someone on here may have or had a similar issue. For a while now Ive had an annoying ticking /clicking noise coming from under the car whilst moving , it’s not there when I’m still . I hung my wife out the window and she was convinced it was coming from the passenger side wheels !. So I’ve removed the wheels and found the discs and pads were worn and very rusty , also the disc guards were rusty. I cleaned up the rusty , blew it all out and the noise got quieter but didn’t go. I then took the car to my mechanic and got him to change the discs , pads and sort out the disc guards thinking that it was probably rust on the discs & pads. He also spent a fair bit of time cleaning up the Calipers and making sure the brakes were good. I’ve just picked it up and the ticking is still there ! , my brakes are now great but I’d like to get this noise sorted , any ideas ?

Its worth checking nothing is stuck in any of the tyres. I once had a similar noise caused by a piece of metal stuck in the tread.

I experienced a tyre flexing on the rim bead that gave a similar noise once. Tyre was under inflated.

I’m thinking it may be something rubbing or catching a drive shaft or prop shaft ? Or maybe a bearing , but it doesn’t sound like a bearing noise And the mechanic did check the wheel bearings.

Does it sound to be at wheel speed, or Engine speed?

Tony.

You beat me to it, I had a ticking that would come and go, lift the hand brake a couple of clicks and it would disappear
I recently has similar symptoms (the car, not me) and the OS brake backplate has slightly corroded, allowing a shoe retaining pin to come loose. Oddly, the NS was not so affected. One check measure for this is a hot disc; often the cause of a hot disc is a faulty calliper, but in my case it was the handbrake shoe rubbing.

I’ve been out this afternoon and tried the handbrake but that made no difference so I’m going to have a try at putting it up on a ramp and running the wheels to see if I can hear anything , I’ve spoke with the mechanic and he thought it could be the abs sensor ? Thanks

If the ABS sensor is catching enough to make a noise there will be visible evidence on the reluctor ring. I doubt it will be that but not impossible. This may be a daft question, but, have you checked the tyres for stones or bits of metal stuck in the treads etc.

Hi , yes , have checked all the wheels and tyres . First time I noticed the noise the car was parked on grass and made the noise as we drove away , but I still checked all the tyres when I got home , thanks

I have had exactly this on my car. It was a loose wheel balance weight flapping. Sounded just like a stone stuck in the tyre tread. Only when I had looked at all the complex and expensive possibilities did I then look for the cheapest and simplest one.

Worth checking out and remember sometimes the balancing weights are on the inner wheel.

Got the car back tonight and the ticking noise is gone , it was the ABS sensor on the front wheel catching the disc guard ?
