Ticking Noise from Z3 2.8

My 2.8 has stood for months at a time and no issues, it's well over 100k too. not sure it's such a big deal on a modern engine regular engine like this. Maybe on an S50 or S54 with seriously tight tolerances but the 2.8 is workhorse of an engine for models right up to the 7 series.

I had a serious tappety noise on a airfield day with some heavy cornering but that went away after some more use. BMW 6 engines engines are well know for that though.

Just had the same ticking issue with mine this morning after it's winter lay up. After 15 minutes the sound has gone.

More than likely be a lifter sticking. Should clear once it's been driven. Mine sometimes does it after being laid up a while

Guys, yesterday I saw a Youtube clip where a guy 'bled' the hydraulic lifters by using the following procedure which he claimed was a BMW procedure. The reviews below were positive. Here it is.

01. make sure oil level is correct.
02. warm engine to operating temp
03. rev and hold the rmp at 3000 for 3 minutes [stationary vehicle]
04. repeat if required.

That's it.

I put in some lifter cleaning fluid prior to a sports run...... and will try this out probably tomorrow. Not sure the fluid did a whole lot of good.

Cheers,

if 3000 rpm equates to 50mph (or whatever it may be) I am sure we have all done that for 3 minutes somewhere.
Why would stationary be different?

Maintaining the rpm is the key. He claims it is BMW procedure so the technicians would not drive the vehicle to do it. It makes sense as well. It is easy, don't have to concentrate, and is a quality controlled procedure without the possibility of distraction.
