right i,m thinking of doing a trip to the french or Normany battle fields but not paying
for a custom trip so any 1 have Idea,s on
1 where to stay
2 where to visit
3 best way to get there

The best way to get there would be the Portsmouth to St Malo ferry Pete, in your Zed!

We stopped here mate earlier this year. Many battlefield POI's are less than an hour away. A nice site (big) and has top notch log cabins up to 4 bed detached. Their are small 2 bedded right out of the way if you want all with good parking with your Zed. We did the Chunnel.

Amazing we did almost the same holiday there 8 years ago and stayed in a static caravan. from the site we visited mant of the First Worls War sites. |Weather was fantastic when we were there and the highlight was visiting Vimy Ridge.

Best way would be the chunnel mate. A lot dearer and more travelling involved doing St Malo.
@katkwak What we do when we go to Europe is travel down to around the Ashford area and stay in a hotel then catch an early Tunnel crossing then you have all day to get to your destination. If you did St Malo then you would have around a 5hr trip to get back up to the area.
 
That will be a very emotion packed trip Pete. I visited many sites in the eighties while traveling Europe and each and every one brought tears to my eyes as I envisioned the conditions and suffering the troops on both sides suffered with so many lives lost. You'll experience a wide range of emotions so be prepared. Enjoy it for what it is! JIM
 
Vimy Ridge, Thiepval, WW1 Armistice Train, Compiegne to name but a few we visited. All full days out with War Memorials to stop and ponder every few minutes in the Somme region.

We've stopped there twice, very good place.
 
We visted Theival Memorial on our way From Calais to the caravan site and stoped in the Somme where both my Grandfathers faught and lived to tell the tail. I found the whole experience very emotional and thought provoking but would like to do it again. We also visted caves that had been used by British and Germans for rests not far from the caravan site.

Can't fault you there, had the same thing when visiting Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery, Bastogne War Cemetery and Malmédy.
I am talking WW2 here though and obviously not in France.
 
We also have visited sites in Normandy from the Second World War on another holiday, We traveled from Calais and stayed at http://www.eurocamp.co.uk/campsites/normandy/nr013-chateau-le-brevedent/ataglance.html. There are lots of sites of interest driving along the coast and I think you would need to decide what you wanted to see to suit your interest. I had an interest in the beaches because my Dad was a Royal Navy Commando during the war.

When I first started working in Libya it made me think straight away about my Granddad who was a desert rat, he made it home in one piece though.
 
It was amazing driving around the area of Malmédy as the locals still put flowers on the spots where allied soldiers fell.
 
Looks like I may have fed you the wrong info regarding the crossing Pete. When we did Brittany ad Normandy a few years back we did the sailing and found everything close by. My mistake.
 
yes i was thinking about where to go as my granddad served in both world wars
& was rescued from Dunkirk
in ww2
1st served with Royal Irish Fusiliers WW1
then with the Sherwood Foresters WW2
so i was thinking more of the WW1 battle fields Areas

Wherever you go it will be quite emotional. I''m sure not many of us can say Gramps fought in both WW's, you must be so proud of him. Safe driving on the trip! JIM

Do it mate, you won't regret it. Once you've been you'll want to go again and frankly you'll need umpteen trips to get a good handle on both WW's.
 
i have all his medals 6 in all from both wars we hand the down to the next male in our family
he was a boy soldier joined as usual under age 16 served till he retired then in the reserves
till war broke out again called to arms & he very rarely talked about it
