Hi all

I'm thinking about buying a roadster, automatic preferably a 3.0 and thought it would be best to do some research. Would be planning on keeping it for a long time so need to also find somewhere for working on it or for a refresh to make it like new underneath.

Tempted by a rebody which I know some will think it's sacrilege!

Anyways hello everyone!

Looking for a Z3 then as the only rebody available on the E85 Z4, which was a Z8 look alike, was only produced in the US.

That was the thinking originally but after speaking to Chris at tribute the Z4 Corvette might be an option... I think by the time I sell mine and purchase one and hopefully get all the underside refreshed (hopefully by the zedshed) the Z4 corvette might be ready... Though after reading on here I'm convincing myself the Z3 is the car to go for...

Do you have any details for the Z4 “Corvette” please?

No details apart from Chris saying the end of the year... I couldn't say if that's the coupe and soft top or just the coupe. To be honest I was still firmly set on a Z3 with the 250 front and maybe a different rear or the 507 when he mentioned it but since then I have been thinking.... Dangerous I know 🤣

I still like the Kobra but the back end is wrong, I think if I extended the flared arch towards the door more it might look better... Would be less faithful to a Cobra but might look better for the flow of the Kobra.

Just seen that you're actually the zed Shed Midlands which is a lot closer to me... Don't know if you do similar refresh work, need to read up more on here!

I'm trying to get used to this forum style as it's totally different to the old myphpbb we used to use.

From about 2 years ago...
Thanks Ian, been reading these and found the ones on mad about kit cars last night, can't register on it but was able to read.

Seems you have done what I was thinking with the 250 front and a different back end! Managed to see 2 photos on the other forum last night, looks very nice! Though I was wondering about the 300 front and a kobra back end also... I need to learn photoshop 🤔

No, I don't do the type of refresh jobs that Lee does. I couldn't do with my garage tied up like he could and even more so with his new workshop. I tend to do short notice repairs etc. like we blitz a few jobs between us on a Saturday.

I thought that might be the case but handy to know as I'm in Cheshire and while I can do some stuff myself my arthritis is making it harder.

Ii had a 2.8 Roadster on an S plate when I first got into Z motoring. The chap I sold that to when I bought my M was from Northern Ireland and he wanted it as the base of an AC Cobra looky likey kit. I'd done lots to improve that car and I can't say I was that impressed when he sent me a picture of it nearly finished.
My Z3M is now for sale too, and even though it's a relative bargain, I can't see anyone wanting to turn it into a Cobra!

I wouldn't want to turn an Z3M into one as I think the M cars should always be just that. Though if one had rusty panels or paint issues I could see the logic in doing so...

I have been thinking if the Z3M had cruise control could I live with it being a manual and keeping it as a Z3M but I would need to drive one to see how light the clutch was.

Well you are in luck, mine is one of very few that you will find that has cruise control fitted. It's also about the cheapest example in good condition that is for sale in the country!

The couple I have looked at have all had it, but thought it might be an option. Though just seen that yours was one of the ones I was looking at on auto trader.
Unfortunately if I do get tempted by a manual it won't be until mine goes in a couple of months. I'm going the other way, currently have a V8 Morgen Aero 8. It's just in the shop having new suspension all round then it's going to have the wood veneer done as it's cracking in places.

Hi - I just got a Z3M very low miles so hardly used but even noting that, the gearbox is extremely light compared to many other cars I have had. I think you would find it is a comfortable drivers car - no need for the automatic. high recommended. I had Morgan as well and this M I think is a better drive. Hope this helps.

That's good to know about the gearbox thanks but how is the clutch? Left foot is currently like Wolverine's hand for another 4 weeks.
Think after that I need to try a couple out but think it still might be an auto, maybe install a cheeky supercharger on it...
