Hi,

bmw z3 1.9 air condition electric fan 1998

recently noted that my temp guage is a bit erratic and goes from middle of guage when in traffic, to cold when moving along and going down hill , and back up to the middle when under heavy load i.e. going uphill...

I beginning to suspect thermostat... looks like mine is plastic housing. and theres no viscous fan so easy to change would the above symptoms suggest a dodgy thermostat... ?

thanks

got two bolts out just going to back up to remove the 3rd as my socket got stuck on the 10mm bolt and didnt have a pliers to get it off... hoses both off, will report back once i have got it off...

i assume its probably stuck open is there any definitive test i can do other than pouring water through it and it coming out the other end is just the thermostat replaceable or do ihave to buy the complete unit ? its plastic housing

It doesn't work in the usual way, the part that moves is actually in the engine, it opens a channel inside. Mine is stuck too but my lower bolts are sized in place, I could possibly get them of with nut removers but didn't want to run the risk of them snapping off, you do need to fix the issue somehow though as it will damage the cat like I have.

You have to buy the complete unit, the part that is stuck does come away from the housing but can't be brought separately.

ahhh right yeah i got it off...removed the two longer bolts by mistake under the thermostat, then realised there was two additional bolts just above the stat... got it all off and cleaned up.... i have removed the stat metal part... was hoping that could be bought seperately... grrr..
never mind had a price off abergavenny brake and clutch for £50 for the whol unit... i have a look around later see if can get a bit cheaper....

as for testing that was what i was gonna do, put it in water... but if it cant be tested i have to bite the bullet and buy a new one...

There might be a way of testing it, but as you have yours out you will notice the part that moves sticks out quite a way. I got mine off euro car parts, think it was around £40, still haven't done mine.
