haha, thanks everyone!

Didn't think you'd need a hard top in Mexico
From what i've felt over the years, the hardtop is better than the soft top in extreme heat, black soft top seems to absorb an immense amount of heat when i leave the car out in the sun.

Of course, then i can just put it down but it's not a good idea as anytime after noon the sun is way too strong/hot and you're in for some nice sun burns within a couple minutes.

Hardtop is on most of the year because when it isn't 40c+ like now, it's rainy and horrible.

Did not take my hardtop off after I bought the car until three years later, that is where the forum name comes from, all the Dutch Zders would say, oh there's that ****** hardtop again....:D

Hi from Canada! I personally like the Ht on the car almost as much as the soft top and I need mine for the opposite to your +40c with -40c in winter. JIM

Hi and welcome from Oxfordshire, what's it like for spares in your country?
Not bad actually, there's plenty of E46's around with the same engine as my Z. and if i need something specific, i live in the north so its easy to get z3 parts shipped from the US.

2.2i Z3 specific parts though.. (like the rear lsd and drive shaft) are impossible to find, and i'm forced to import from europe.

Was planning to swap out the steptronic (which i hate, by the way!) for a 5 speed and the only thing hard to get was going to be the drive shaft.. but for simplicity I'll be getting a 2.5i rear differential and drive shaft along with the transmission. (All perfectly compatible) That way I'll have an LSD (according to the vin registry i have a shorter final drive diff, not an lsd) and not have to cope with the nightmares that are trans atlantic shipping.

Spares aren't a problem here, the problem is the actual service.

All complicated mechanical work on my car is done by an indie mechanic i've always taken my german cars to, i actually went to a dealer last week to see if they could reset the airbag light -- they wouldn't even touch the car, were overall very rude to me and essentially told me to go away because my car was "too old" despite clearly having a couple of E53 X5's sitting in the shop. not good.

And also.. thanks for everyone's kind comments :)
