Sometimes I long for the old days of distributors, points, carburettors and simple diesel injection systems, but only sometimes.
Tony, I find myself longing for those days more and more. Just this afternoon I tested a '99 VW Polo and at the end of the camshaft housing there was this shiny orange thing with cables coming out of it ....................... made my day.:)

Until I got in my 3.0 straight six car and left Lincoln behind me

Tony.

My son was away at Loughborough University and his car would not start. He diagnosed the problem as the distributor that was mounted on the end of the camshaft. After buying and fitting a replacement from a local breaker the problem still existed so I took a drive over to give a second opinion. He had failed to notice that the camshaft was not turning due to all the teeth on the belt being stripped, probably due to excessive revs when changing down. He was lucky that it was a safe engine and one new belt later all was good again. Today that would be one knackered engine.

A very rare thing these days mate, especially if it had been diesel flavour.:( I can well remember changing the timing belt on the Rover/Austin Montego etc. engines on the road side and sending people merrily on their way, same with the Pinto engine(sometime)
