The hot summer of 1976

I was only 4 so don't remember 2 much but i was there

What a wonderful summer that was, I was at work but remember getting up in the morning and not having to think about what to wear, summer clothes everyday :)
These days I'm lucky if any summer clothes make an appearance except when we go abroad :)
Lets all have positive thoughts and just maybe we can will the weather to be kind to us this year

We got married the day after the summer stopped in Sept '76. It was so dark outside the photographs had to be taken with the flash on.

Typical that's the British weather for you :( no 2 days the same :(

Standpipes up here in Yorkshire and Mum sending me to get a bucket of water. !

Funnily enough it was also my first holiday abroad when my parents took me to Spain which was rather ironic considering the weather. ;)

I remember driving out of Newquay Saturday early, looked out
To sea and saw the rain clouds approaching,
It caught us up half way home
It was a long long drive back in 76

I was just a snip of a lad but I remember that year. I lived on the banks of the River Wye in those days and I remember the river being very low and the salmon dying, for weeks you could see dead salmon floating past, smelt pretty bad too. Us village kids would normally swim in there during the summer hols but that year we all had a strict ban from our parents the water was pretty disgusting.

i was 7, i can remember the water was off, we had a water bowser in the street, the only part i remember clearly was when it started to rain. the rest of it at that age wouldn't have bothered me. every time i smell the summer rain it reminds me of this moment, (its got certainn aroma, though its probably coming from the ground).

Remember it well - when I say well, we studied it at school in history IIRC.:D

I was in my 5th job in 16 years and was working as a buyer for Air products, had been married 10 years just finished extending our second house and having a double garage built for my two Humbers an Imperial and a Hawk that was in Ewell, and carrying watering cans up the garden to my veg patch (where that house was in now a super market car park.
Wonder what this summer will be like ??

I was living out in Germany (army days) and it was damn hot over there, much further from the sea than anywhere in Britain. Remember being on the ranges while a squadron of Chieftains were live firing. And setting fire to the ranges with almost every shot. If I remember rightly, the year didn't start off too well, seemed pretty cold in Ulster.

Oh dear, started something here! Well, you're right Nefyn cat.Apart from the end of June and most of July,1976 wasn't that good.It was hot then, but earlier and later it was pretty dire as I recall. We went up to Whitby for the Spring Bank Holiday week and it rained all day every day.
The fact that we had water shortages and standpipes is typical of this country expecting things to be 'normal' all the time. Two snowflakes and roads are closed - how do the Canadians manage or any other place with proper snow???I lived in Spain for eight years and it rarely rained, but we never had a hosepipe ban.Too many people sitting around drinking tea so nothing gets done and they use all the water up.=))

76 was a wonderful year celebrating my oldest's first birthday with family and friends! Great weather all summer and my van club hosted a first vanrun weekend with 600 cases of beer donated by our sponsor. 13 1/2 hrs of sleep all week. JIM

Sounds like a great week you had @oldcarman :p
Those were the days ....... Hey :)

Yes that was the year the government advocated sharing a bath because of the shortage of water. Strange took me days to find a woman to share a bath with. Happy days!
