i like the idea of having guns for recreational purposes,it's the thought of having to use it for my or my family's safety.i have never given any thought of what I would do if we had a home invader,but I would be a little p*****.Id phone the police,then keep my family out of the way and wait.those are pretty much my options

@Cartoon6pk there is no problem with this thread, as it is, as other people have said, it is interesting.
Its just that Brits and other Europeans would not be able to deal with having them, as everything is a lot more compact over here, if that makes sense......

We know a guy who owns/runs a small hotel in Islamorada and we had a similar talk with him (Mike) and he revealed that he has a carry permit and proceeded to show us that he did indeed carry it. We were a little taken aback but nice to know he has the means to protect himself if that's what he needs. I watch, every evening, a news channel from Central Florida where our villa is and every night you see reports of shootings, home invasions, drive by shootings etc. BUT these happen miles away from where we are and from the tourist areas, this is why you are given the advice not to go to these areas. This where the drug dealers and gangsters live, it's a different world and a different time too. ALL of this takes place in the early hours of the morning while ordinary people are fast asleep in bed. Consequently you don't feel in any danger because you never see this side of their life, but it's there and I can fully understand @Cartoon6pk point of view. I do feel sorry that most law abiding Americans feel a real need to "protect" themselves and god forbid it gets like that over here.

I am sorry, I was trying to make a point about having the best of something. I don't have to own a gun that can shoot 1000 yards to feel safe, just like I don't have to have a car that can do 11 seconds in the quarter mile. I own that gun because I want to, and it was a great investment. Heck I have a bow that can do the same thing at 100 yards and my best friend was a pitcher that could kill someone at 50 yards with a rock. You will never understand me. I Shoot with my friends we see who is the best and how far we can shoot. I'm sure you do the same type of competition with cars. We don't think of guns as a demons from hell or gods from the heavens. They are a tool that can be used for good or bad.
What would you do if you had a home invader, or is that an impossibility?
I would just like to know.
We have the right to keep and bear armies that is in order to from a militia. That is also to keep out government in check. I pray that will never happen, but I also have the best weapon that I can afford in case I need it and it's my right. Shotgun is always best home defense!

Im also sorry I said I will not talk about guns, I just wanted to try clarify what I had said. Im glad we are both happy where we live.

If my house was invaded with me and my family in it I would get my baseball bat out from under my bed as would my son. We would protect @jue1 if it were needed. We are not in any way violent but I would protect my family to the death. I would not own a gun or ever dream of shooting anybody regardless of circumstances. A gun to me is a cowards way out. Stand up and hold your ground. If we shot someone who was in our property in this country we would get life imprisonment.
You have no need to apologise, we all have our own opinions on life. In this case mine is just different to yours.

We agree on protecting our family and we are both nonviolent, I don't want to hurt anyone and I agree that the use of any weapon against an unarmed person is the cowards way. What I take issue with is a gun as used as protection as the "cowards way!". I will take any man on one on one with just my hands, especially when my family is evolved, no weapons, just me. Bad people/cowards many times, take advantage of the old and weak none of them can do much with a baseball bat. When I defend my family I will do that in the best way I can, that goes for me defending my friends and my country, do you feel the men and women in the police force or military that use the best weapons to defend us and protect us are cowards because they use guns? How is that any different then when I defend my family that same way? The British people are amazing they stood against nation after nation defending themselves many times with guns, Planes, tanks, swords anything they could get, and all that time they were civilized. Winston Churchhill is one of my most favorite leaders and people to quote, I can't believe he would think that defending the world from the Nazis with guns as a cowards way.
The big difference that I see between you and I, is that we look at freedom different, you are happy that good people would spend life in prison protecting their family, because that is what their government says they should do. I want my freedom to do what I want and not be told that I have to have my 110lb wife protect herself and the kids with a bat. When someone hurts anyone on purpose that is when they need to spend the rest of their life in jail! Freedom is dangerous, it's not easy and yes we have problems, we have Too many guns that bad people get, but we have laws, you have laws and bad people continue to break them. I don't know if you see what is going on in this world but it is a very dangerous place, not just in the United States. I pray that you never have to use you bat or that I have to use my 14 shot 45 Springfield XD with black talon ammo.
One more thing my best friend had an exchange student from the Norway I asked him about the freedom they had, he said they are very free, I said what about guns, he said no guns, ever I asked him about protection, he said that carrying a baseball bat was against the law unless you have a ball with it, no knives, no defending yourself at all, just call the police,
Everyone wants and demands different freedoms, and you may loose your freedom to use your bat someday.

Totally get where you're coming from . I have Norwegian friend he has a hunting rifle you need a license,and be of good character and the police have a say in it.baseball bats are allowed just don't wave one around in a convenience store.by the way biathlon is really popular in Norway and they have a successful national team.no one expects you to roll over and take it that's just propaganda.they just don't want you to confront anyone with a weapon,leave it to the professionals.been a good debate .think of another.
