Just saw this, another interpretation of how the BMW company logo is explained.

BMW — The German car company was established out of an aircraft manufacturing firm in 1917. Though BMW was forced to stop producing aircraft in 1918 by the Treaty of Versailles, it held onto its heritage with its logo: The white quarters represent a propeller

Or there's the equally likely explanation that the blue and white segments reflect the blue and white pattern of the Bavarian flag.

Personally I grew up with tony's version​

When you visit the BMW museum at Munich, they Give you the propeller version but say that the colours are based on the bavarian flag.

Also grew up with Tonys version, but told its a myth and as Gail says, based on the Bavarian flag. The myth was from a 1929 advert featuring the logo in the centre of the propeller

In last Sunday’s Automobiles section, I wrote about visiting a quartet of German car museums. At the BMW Museum in Munich, my affable tour guide, Anne Schmidt-Possiwal, explained that the blue-and-white company logo did not represent a spinning propeller, but was meant to show the colors of the Free State of Bavaria.

That was the point in posting it Mike, that's the 3rd different explanation I've heard. Please Mr. BMW tell us the truth !!

Well mate that's what happens when you let a 59 year old blacksmith loose on a keyboard! Not too sure what occurred but that was the 3rd attempt and then I grew bored.
