12 months later and i thought to go back to document my first 12 months with a BMW Z3 - aka "Buffy"

So I wanted another motorbike after a 3 year absence, but my wife and I also wanted baby and a motorbike doesn't agree with worried mums to be. So I started looking at what the suitable alternative was. It has to be small enough to fit in my micro garage but also give me enjoyment. This led me to look at MGF's because i liked their Aston Martin like styling and BMW Z3's because of ..... everything about it. Price was a key factor and i wanted to make sure whichever Z3 i got, was a 6 cylinder version, to avoid being ripped by friends (no offense to 1.9 owners). I started out on eBay and compared 2 Z3's of identical specs but with 60k difference in mileage and £1,500 in price. I ended up spending an extra £1,000 on getting the one with a lot less miles.

Before buying I paid for a history check, to try and put me at ease before travelling from Chester to Hertford. The car came with a brand new MOT (that day) which had no faults so I continued on the test drive.
The faults I found at the time:
  • Drivers door had black screws holding the handle to the frame
  • Drivers seat, only 1 of the runners was working, so it twisted rather than going forward and back
  • The gear knob had wiring sticking out (broken cable for light up M knob)
  • On the pictures the bodywork was good, but on collection the MOT station had clearly scraped the front bumper
  • ABS light was on. It wasn't registered on the MOT and he told me it was an intermittent fault
I continued to checked the 'Full' history he had and was overall happy, subject to him knocking the price down. It had only 36,000 mile after all and was 15 years old!!

We eventually agreed on £4k, but I was at the train station getting out of the car before he called to agree. Almost too late. Here are the original listing photos:

On the long drive back from Hertford to Abersoch i found more to be 'slightly' wrong with the car but i was still in love with it.
  • Washer jets didn't work. Made a noise, but didn't squirt
  • Radio needed the code. Which was somewhere within the paperwork
  • Lighter socket wouldn’t charge my phone which was my sat nav source
  • A slight leak occurred when I went through a monsoon around Birmingham but put that down to the downfall and not the car
  • Drivers seat, only the back heated, not the bum :(
Other than all this, the car drove great, sounded fine and until I got to a roundabout in the wet, had great handling. I went backwards out of the roundabout, but this was my first rear wheel drive car.

The first round of fixes included:
  • Drivers seat, one of the track rods from the motor had come out. Easy fix when you remove the motor and slot the rod back in
  • Washer jets required me to remove the bottle which was full and wash out the green algae blocking the filter at the bottom
  • Radio worked now the code was entered
  • Lighter socket just needed a new fuse replacing. Wish I had thought of that on the drive back
  • At this point, not all of the car lights were working. It had 1 side light out, 2 indicators out and a brake light. These are all easy fixes, but flagged the serious question over the MOT station which clearly got a bit of cash to put the car through as a favour
After this the car had it's first service in 10,000 miles, which was also 9 years! with a BMW specialist near me who also gave the car a once over. Only concern flagged was around rusted brake lines to the rear but everything else looked great!

When replacing the petrol cap locking bolt, i came across some of my car's history.
Looks like it had a knock in the past rods were welded to knock it out?

Wow! Quite a thread there Ryan. Most cars heading towards 20 years old will have a history of sorts. It looks Good, excellent interior for starters.

So what does 2018 and beyond hold for my Z3??? Well i'd love to take my daughter out in it, but until she can sit in a seat with an airbag, i can't risk it. So until then I'll keep building up my to do list
  • Air Induction Kit & Heat Shield (K&N with Silicon or Aluminium hose?)
  • Alloy Refurb for all 4 corners and wheel rim protectors fitted
  • Clean and paint the brake calipers in Monte Carlo blue (but i won't add an M Sport sticker)
  • Bodywork polish (bought the polish and pads)
  • Glass repair kit to buff out the scratches from the windscreen
  • Headlight refurb kit
  • Change LSD oil (because i want to)
  • New metal license plate
  • New car mats
  • Spare seat gaskets replaced
  • Replace windscreen washer (drivers side leaks)
  • Buy and fit vinyl charcoal stone guards (Looks like Audi R8 vents)
  • Front bumper removal, repair and respray
  • Replace front wishbones (quite rusty looking)
  • New door sill trim
  • Car cover for next Christmas
Basically, try to keep it original but get it back to looking factory fresh...where possible

Excellent write-up. 'Backwards off the roundabout', love it =)) As for the MOT, I'm sure mine was just like yours, a Christmas Day check, yup, tick, that'll do  Fortunately my local £35pph Indy garage is spot on. Enjoy

I think it was paid to get through to help with the sale. But i had the MOT re-done by VOSA just to make sure nothing else was wrong. Fingers crossed it passes this year without fault

Nice write up so far, you will be forever finding jobs to do with theses cars now due to the age. There are so many different upgrades for the Z3 and parts are cheap plus plenty being broken, lots of enthusiasts to swap and buy parts from. You will enjoy doing all the little jobs and get a lot of satisfaction from it in the end plus the community is great to be a part of. Keep the posts coming!

I'm looking for Bluetooth connectivity but also want to keep the original head unit. What's the Dension adaptor like? Easy to install? Sound good? And what model did you get? Cheers

Evening, really good kit. I got the BT gateway one to use with mine so that I would have Bluetooth. It only works with the CD43 headunit which is the BMW business CD player. It plugs into the back of it easy peasy, 1 connector in between the main feed and then the other into the CD changer connector. I then used the A pillar to route the microphone for calls. Only needed to loosen the fixing screws on the headunit. Nothing else.
