The being at home positivity thread!

On a much smaller note Shirl has been buying hand moisturisers when she 's been shopping a few each time since Lock Down. Last week she took a basket full of them with a Thank You note up to Abbie's so she could take it in to work and share with the other staff at LCH.
It was well received and much appreciated.

Nice mate

As they say Andy, "It's the thought that counts".

Don’t think I’ve seen anything so awe inspiring for quite a while, this guy is about a positive as you can get... what he’s doing is hard enough work for an able bodied person...

Speechless.

Inspirational. This guy makes me feel inadequate, and I'm fully fit....... I'm totally in awe of his can do ethos.

Bonzo.

And when you find out how he lost both his arms as a child, well it's even more incredible.

Next project! When I decided not to be fat anymore a fair few months back I decided I wanted to get back in to bike riding. I didn't have a bike and a mate offered me his to get me going. Done a fair few miles on it the last year or so, but it's got to the stage where my riding requirements don't work well with it. It's configured as a hardcore downhill mountain bike for which it is undoubtedly awesome, but it's horrendously low geared and has fat knobbly tyres (a bit like me before my diet).

I've been looking on and off at buying a new bike to match my riding style, but as I'm stuck working from home I thought I would increase my bicycle upgrading knowledge from absolute bugger all, to somewhere vaguely knowledgeable.

Project goal is to make it quicker on the flat towpaths/gravel tracks I use, and subsequently a bit safer on road. I don't "downhill"!

So this is the candidate... (It's dirty cos it gets used!)

So initial plans are to upgrade the chain rings from 24/36 to 32/48. First I had to learn all about BCD (bolt circle diameter) which is the equivalent of PCD on car wheels (currently 4 x 104 for the main ring and 4 x 64 for the small one).

Could only figure this out by working out how to remove the crank, so had to learn about the different types for that. Followed by "bottom brackets". Figured I can pull the existing crank apart and remove the two chain rings to measure them accurately. Found a nifty chart which could be printed off and the chain rings placed on top, line the holes up and it gives the correct bolt pattern.

So I now have a couple of chain rings being delivered in the next couple of days.

Because the current chain rings are smaller than the new ones, I need to lengthen the chain. I've cheated and ordered a new chain, and a set of chain tools to fit it.

Finally for now, I've just ordered some new rubber. Dropping the size slightly from 26" x 2.35 to 26" x 2.20, and changed the style to a cyclo cross tread pattern. No more aggressive knobblies so it won't sound like a nest of angry wasps on tarmac, and lower rolling resistance so it's a little easier on my lungs!

Heaven knows how this all goes back together, I'm hoping it's as plug and play as it should be. Should it all fit together then I need to work out how to adjust derailleurs again (something I've not done since I was 15.

Cross your fingers for me.... :bag:

Good to have a project which is hands on @GazHyde.As a fellow cyclist, albeit road bikes, I've been renovating an old steel racer and upgrading parts.Just waiting for a new wheel rim from Holland. Ordered Monday, arriving today! Post taking about two weeks in the UK.Hope you get it sorted to suit your riding.

MightyBikeMods, is it? Been playing with mine, can you spot the new brakes?
WP_20200513_003.webp
Yep, hydraulic calipers. Things have changed since I were a lad, and rim brakes were all you could get. Which was fine till you buckled a rim a bit, and had to put up with hideous shuddering for ever more.

Shame I've run out of yellow caliper paint, likes a bit of colour I do.;)If there's anyone else thinking about a brake upgrade, the hydraulic ones are well worth it, and I speak as someone from a land made out of hills. And sheep. Just waiting on the floating discs to turn up, going up to 203mm on the front. There'll be a fair chance of face-planting coming up, I fear.:wideyed:

Hydraulic brakes may be in the future for mine, but for now I'm still waiting for the blooming chain rings to arrive - current estimate is Sunday now...

We've had this old wooden filing cabinet for many years and were thinking of retiring it as it was getting a bit rickety. So into Shed it went for a refurb. Removed the back panel and installed some braces to the corners of the cabinet to stop the front to rear rocking.

Then I glued the back panel and secured with slightly longer screws.

Now, it looks like this as I spent this afternoon sanding it down for a coat of paint.

And before anyone asks, We took it to the Antiques Road show and it's worth 2 and threepence ha'penny.;)=))

Waiting for the last chain ring to be delivered by Amazon this afternoon, so thought I better get cracking.

Definitely needs a clean, but much easier like this.

Out with the Maxxis mud pluggers 26x2.35 and in with Schwalble CX Comp 26 x 2.0. The look much narrower, but the plan is less rolling resistance.

Trying out some Slime smart tubes.

That's all for now!

Well this last week was spent sorting the garden out. I built the summer house a good few years ago now along with the decking to the front.
The centre area had been in a 6 years and just looked alittle tired along with the raised beds that i knocked up that where now past their best.
Added a concrete floor and a lick of paint to the summer house to refresh it and decided to freshen it all up.
Two skips and 60hours later we went from this.
