But autos do take the fun out of driving.

I used to think like that but when I tried the Steptronic gearbox, I changed my mind.

But its really bad over here up in the north, when I had to catch a morning flight at Amsterdam airport, that is 20 mins away from where I live, I used to leave 1 1/2 hours for the drive.
And don't get me started on the bridges that open up on the motorways so that vessels can get down the canals.....

For every day driving a modern auto box is the way to go. My Jag has a brilliant auto box with flappy paddles that I rarely use but a sport setting that transforms the car into a sporty saloon goes like sh** off a shovel.

The sport button transforms the Z too, but for lazy driving D and kick-down is quite sufficient.

Have to agree on Auto box , never even notice the changes in the 8 speed auto on the X1 great for traffic ,crawling along the A55 between road works.
I just wish the stop start could be banned,that really delays traffic starting away.

I snapped my chin bone near my knee when I was at work 200 miles from home. Luckily I had my auto with me or I wouldn't have got home.

I drive a VW Touran 1.4 TSi (lucky me) with a 7 speed DSG box. It's fun to drive but I am on the third one in 6 years. Both replacements under warranty (if I paid the labour).

Love an auto but not so impressed with the DSG so far.
