Well having owned a Z3 2.2i for sometime, but now owning a Z4 2.2i I thought I'd fit a new water pump, belts, thermostat etc.Must be similar? Very accessible on the Z3. So why did BMW decide to put the support frame behind the radiator right in front of the engine on the Z4?? BMW recommend removing the front of the car to do the job.I see from looking into it that it is possible to wiggle the pump out by lifting the engine on one side . Not something I'm up for in my cramped garage with the tools I've got so it's off to my trusted independent BMW man.

Going on what I’ve seen Ken, you have to remove the lower nut on the N/S engine mounting and lift the motor. I agree, stupid idea. I have contemplated cutting the crossbar and bolting it back in place.

Tony.

So is it the same on the 3.0L Tony? They obviously don't give much thought to long term maintenance when designing cars.Eg, Z4 roof motor. I'm sure you do a lot of 'F.ing' in your job.:)

Used to often say "if the to55er who designed this piece of s*** had to work on it . . . . " but not so much these days.

Oh yes, a very familiar phrase..
The parking sensors on Mrsw's VW Tiguan packed up a while ago. A mate runs a small repair business and he kindly plugged it into his fault code reader - front sensor alarm failure. Couldn't find the buzzer anywhere so in the end I booked it into the local indy VW specialist. Turns out that when they build the car the buzzer must be the first part they fit, before the heater, the fuse boxes and the dashboard. A £7.50 part ended up costing me £250
