Temp Gauge

Hi all

1998 Z3 1.9 owner. Recently taken ownership from the Outlaws. Noticed that the temp gauge sits just above the blue section, even on a long journey. Previous cars (non-BMW) I’ve had always settle in the middle of the gauge between the Blue and Red sections, so this one is bugging me.

Wondering if anyone else has any views on this, please?

Many thanks

The indicator should sit central on gauge - i.e. vertical position. The usual culprit is thermostat stuck part open.

Thanks (again), have you done one of these changes yourself? I'm no mechanic, so wondering what the difficulty scale is?

Yes - done this and water pump at same time. Stat is straightforward and on the M44 (1.9) you can access it without removing radiator. You have to partially drain system - problems can arise with air in system on re-prime and the usual tip is to elevate front of car when priming.

I've seen M36 mentioned for my engine, as well as M44... how best to be sure. VIN search (somewhere?)

The Z3 1.9 had either an M43 or M44 engine. Easy to tell the difference by looking at the top. The M43 is single cam and the M44 is twin cam.
