Taking advantage of the MOT extension?

@Gremlin .

Mot extension is for ALL vehicles that mot expires after 30/03/20.

Extension will be applied a day or so before expiry date. ( again to all applicable vehicles)

Insurance companies will honour any vehicle with an extended mot.

If you have an extension and you get a duplicate printed it will show the extended date as the expiry date.

If you try to mot an extended vehicle on the registration screen a warning is shown to let you know it is too early for mot ( doesn't stop it being done if customer wants it done ) .

One thing is if your mot is extended and you choose to carry it out and it fails your extension goes out the window.

I did a Fiesta today that had an extension mot was valid until 10/11/20 advised customer did not require mot to be done .
Car has failed and now needs to be repaired to be legally driven on a public road.

Stephen.

I am still an active Mot tester with 20 yrs behind me so I have properly looked into this to make sure information given to customers is correct.

Not sure if correct or not, I’ve just had my caddy van mot done as I did not want to chance it.
I was told the extension only is allowed if you are in total self isolation and can not get to mot station, I was also told there are some insurance companies ( not all ) that will only insure it as fire and theft. This is because if you are in total isolation you should not be on the road, and if you are on the road then you can drive to get it’s mot done.
As I say this is only hear say all I can say is check especially with regards your insurance.

why do people make this drivel up? it is clear on the government website why, its solely to limit the spread of Covid19 by allowing MOTs to be done later when the virus numbers are more under control

Well that’s what my mate who owns the garage where I have my mot done told me.

Bullshit mate. Tell him to get his facts right instead of scaring people (you) into taking a car for test when there's no f ****ng need. A real good mate you've got there.

Tony.

Ok soooory keep your hair on.

If its going to get shitty on here when some one says something then stuff it I'm leaving. I felt your message a little abusive. I am not into scaring people nor do I need you telling me what my friends are like.

Maybe you should read what I said again. I didn't say you were scaring people, I said your mate was. On the other hand you shouldn't come on here telling people things which are not true, especially about insurance and such. I may not be an MOT tester anymore but I can still read what advice the Govt. gives out. Stay or go ..... up to you, but do not leave because you don't like the truth.

And if you care to read what I put I said I was not sure and I said it was only hear say, it was you that came back abusive. And as for truth I am certainly not afraid of it, nor am I worried about being told I am wrong. What I don’t like are people like you telling me who I should chose as my friends.
And as regards the insurance thing I do know that there were certain ones stating that it was put on the news feed yahoo. ( not all Insurance companies)

Well copy and paste such info then at least it shows it's out there. I honestly cannot believe it's a fact, I suspect someone has got it wrong, as your mate did regarding the MOT. OK he's your mate, maybe a good one but as a tester he should not be saying crap like he told you.
The extension was put out there to protect testers and customers alike and in my opinion anyone who takes their car for a test while it's under the protection of the 3 month extension is as guilty of putting the NHS (my daughter) in harms way just as much as the idiots who are going to parks and beaches.

Come on guys we're not all on here to have a pop at each other its because of our common love for zed models.

You've both said your bit can we maybe just leave it at that and agree to disagree :).

Stephen.

If there was a need to postpone MOT's because of self isolation you would only need a 14 day extension, maybe 20 at the most if you contracted the virus on the 13th day after self isolation due to someone you lived with,

6 months has been given automatically, and that has not been done with any expectation that the insurers will not then pay out because of it.

You should show him these posts, so he does not spread those stories to others.
then get him to come on here and publicly apologise, for making Tony and yourself differ, and upset the harmony of this forum ;)

Deffo extended and then sorn, doesnt make sense to not take advantage not aware on any requirements inc insurance

There are no requirements on Insurance.

Well i didnt mean to spark a riot....... But the good news is that i am booked in for next week so MOT here we come.

Whilst there i will be having a simple service, just an oil and filter change reall BUT i have asked that they change the gearbox oil for me too and they have quoted £70 on top.
I know the oil required will be between £30-£40 and to be fair i dont have the abilty to get underneth to do it myself anyway so £30 labour is acceptable to me......But my question is this. Whats your thoughs on the oil? I would prefer to know whats being using but they just said it will be something like 75/90 but didn't give a brand. I wonder if i should buy the oil i want them to use or just have faith?

It's been a while since I did mine, plus it's a humble 2.2, but I'm sure I put ATF in, and it's still working. Probably best to try opie oils and see what they recommend. And if you've not had the diff oil changed, might be worth thinking about while there's a man in grubby overalls under there.;)

Thanks, i did the Diff oil last year and asked at the time they do the gearbox oil too. When i picked the car up they said BMW state oil is lifetime and didnt need doing.
But in my head its 20 years old and im not willing to put the lifetime of the box in the hands of the lifetime of a bit of oil.

Depending on the tag on side of box determines oil type my Dakar uses ATF in the manual box others use an 80w oil so a 75/90 would be required can't remember off the top of my head which is which.

Stephen.
