Hi, I have a 98 z3m roadie. It's got a blown sub, and I was looking into replacing it. It's got the two speakers inside. ( Harmon Kardon ) just wondered where's the best place to get stock replacement,or can I get a kicker in the plastic box without too much faffing about. Any help much appreciated.

@Synclare has the HK Sub that I took out of my Z3 to put in roll hoops. It's nearly 20 years old but was working when it came out.

Hi there. Thanks for responding. Is this the two driver sub ?
Ooh, sorry mate, not a techy type guy so I don't know what that means. Adrian may know more once he's had a look.

Ha ! Neither am I !! My sub is a black plastic box with two speakers. One facing forwards one back.

Evening lee. I did look up rha's post but it looked a bit complicated to be honest. I was hoping I may be able to just replace what's there. The box that seems to be popular is for the single sub 6.5 kicker. I've got two 5.2 inch drivers in mine.

Hi guys, think you'll need to look at @Antm72 Hk speaker upgrade post, as mine was the old non Hk with just 6speaker set up. I tried fitting a Z3 specific Hertz speaker set upgrade with a new Alpine HU and found the this set up works real well and a big improvement, but lacks the bassyness of a nice car ice, so while being guided by Zedonist I decided to make a box (aka Susan's bass box ints) and port it to the front so not to loose all bass up out the cab with roof down, only prob is that's as far as I've got with it and so no idea how it sounds. Plan to finish it this spring though with some help with the wireing from Ant. Let you all know how good it is then or if not you'll never know,=)) Heres a couple of pics of the build to save you trying to find it.

I had the H.K with the two speakers sounded really poor and even after a rewire and speaker change was still bad.
Set about building a box to house a single 6.75 kicker sub and as its 2ohm dual coil it runs off the H.K amp but the sound is brilliant .
Very punchy and is felt and heard roof up and down takes a little work but makes a big difference:thumbsup:

Hi. I was just reading your old post ! So even after installing new speakers it was as. Zedonist said because you were running an amplified signal into the amp. If I take the alpine hu out and connect speakers with rca will that sort it ?

Of a sort. You can get away with two knives, slide them down the sides. P.S for those who don't know Matt bought my M a few years back :D

Although I really don't fancy taking the interior to bits to do the wiring.

I run a Sony Headunit .The car has the H.K amp and as standard the bmw business head unit.
I originally brought the H.K wiring loom which fed the amp with just low level out.
Now this was terrible im not sure that the BMW headunit has no amp as when powered with the Sony via rca you could turn the stereo up 2 max and still not hear it with the roof down !!!!
Changed the lead back to a normal one and it now behaves like the old head unit just with better sound quality.

Also did you build the box so that the original lid goes back on or did you build another ? I don't like the look of putting that leather on top of a new box.
