Style 42 challenge

I have been a bit of a fan of style 42s for a while and jumped at this set from a forum member and oh my are they in need of a bit of TLC, I do love a challenge though,
Firstly I split both fronts with no issues which surprised but the rears didn't first one snapped 5 bolts and the second snapped 4 and rounded one which I drilled, all of them came apart with the help of a lump hammer, I was hoping to do them grey inner and polished outer but the corrosion has gone too deep, however I am going to see if I can get them diamond but doubtful as they have to be very straight, failing that I will paint the outer bright sil

Where have they been, the bottom of the north sea ?.
Knowing your work they'll end up looking the business though .

They have been sat on a 3.0l that was garaged for a number of years

Want to have a go at splitting mine... Any tips aside from the lump hammer? Did you apply any heat to the rim when removing the bolts?

Looking forward to seeing how you get on Sean... A superb wheel and you've definitely got the right idea with the contrasting colour.

Hey Stef, when I split my 108s what I did was slacken all the bolts while the wheels were on the car using a long bar to make turning them easier. Also if the wheel is supported and stopped from turning you can use both hands to keep the tool in the bolt head and turn it.

I gave the a dose of release oil for a couple of days, just stacked them on top of each other to give me a good working height and used a meter long breaker bar, this was OTT for the fronts but believe me it was needed for the rears, I can't believe how strong the titanium bolts are considering they are only 5-6 mm

I have no idea why there were so deteriorated as the rest of the car is sound. But I felt they were beyond what I was likely to be able to do with them. So they are in the right hands now

I have 3 sets of 108s to choose from (also all need a refurb) for mine. Although I have to say the 'Style 42's have grown on me, especially as they are 17" and the 108s are 18" which I'm not so keen on.

Actually Sean's wheels are not Style 42s. Style 42s are identical 1-piece rims as below.

As far as I can tell BMW never allocated a Style name to the split rim version and they are known somewhat clumsily as 'Cross spoke comp.II 42' or Option S263 on the build sheet.

I got confused between the 2 for ages.

The Style 42 has 10 u-shaped sections separated only by triangles.

The Style 78 has 5 u-shaped sections with both triangles and elongated diamond shapes inbetween.

We bought ours with split rims ( did not know they were different at that time),the build spec says
