I bought a second pair of calipers which are in a fairly sorry state at the moment, however the plan is to refurb these allowing me to do a straight swap rather than making my zed immobile.

Unfortunately it looks like this bleed screw has seized and is now stripped. Thanks to my many attempts at trying to remove it (unsuccessfully).

This is what it currently looks like - I'm sure I've posted about this before.

Tried sticking it in a vice, using vice grips, whacking the head with a hammer, using penetrating fluid etc etc.

As a final resort i was attempting to drill through it but the bit snapped and is now stuck inside...

Any advise on an easier way?

I don't want to damage the threads inside either.

If i was in work and at where you are at my next action would be oxcy out gentle heat round edge then it would be one of my spiral sockets for removing rounded bolts round the outside of whats left .

I was able to break of the top with a vice grip which left me a smooth surface from where i was able to retrieve the broken drill bit. I had a look inside and was able to free up the 'bleed vessel'

However, not happy about the fact that I'll now have swarf in there.... And I can't get the bleed screw in there as the threads are knackered. Even before I set out to doing anything I could see that the bleed screw was non standard - didnt match up to the other calipers, so something has gone on here in the past.

Do I get some new threads machined in? Or would it be cheaper and safer to buy another caliper?

Hi @Faheem If you need some taps for the threads give me a call. When drilling don't go too deep or you will damage the seat that the bleed nipple seals against. If you do the caliper will needs machining or probably scrap.

Try soaking it in a bucket of diesel oil. It might come out without you needing to resort to drilling

The ones that are on the car are in better shape but for the sake of not making the car immobile for a long period I thought to refurb these @Sean d

The entire caliper new for £30?? Where from?

I was under the impression that the rear calipers are the same across all models except for the M's...

For jobs like that you need to get a pair of grips with flat jaws. That type with rounded jaws, in my opinion, are next to useless for undoing a hexagonal fixing.

Thanks @t-tony I'll have to invest in a set at some point, they are inexpensive and a useful thing to have.

@Sean d That is still a lot cheaper than what I'm able to get a pair for - the cheapest I can them for is around £120 each for a good quality OE caliper - if I could get them at £60 each I'd much rather get them new than spend money on a second hand set and pay to have them blasted and then putting new seals in etc. Would save some time and money getting them brand new at £60 each - let me know if you've seen any :)

I priced them up at Andrew page a while ago and if we opened an account with them they would do the fronts at £25 each and I think the rears where £67 each but we won't open an account with them due to some discrepancies when we had one last time.

£79 from brake parts.Co. uk for rears
Piston and seal kit is £25 so probably cheaper to get a new set rather than refurbising a spare set

Thanks @Brian4

I've been lazy and clearly haven't done my research properly. =))

My only concern is whether the quality will be on par with the standard OEM calipers that come with the car. I can see some on other websites now too for £55 each for the rears but again these aren't OEM but made by a company that I've never heard of before...

Guess what . . .
rears are stupid price compared to the larger fronts.....
True, but why, there are as many rear callipers as there are fronts. Doesn't make any sense to me.o_O

Find a engineering company with a Spark Eroder they will be able to spark it out and then maybe re-cut the thread (just a cash job maybe a tenner)
