I could have lost my sister yesterday, but my parents recognised the symptoms when speaking to her on the phone yesterday morning. Luckily they got her to the local A&E quickly, and she doesn't seem to have been affected as badly as she could have been. She now has to start the road to recovery.

Some information for those who don't know...

What is a stroke?
A stroke is a brain attack. It happens when the blood supply to the brain is disrupted. Most strokes occur when a blood clot blocks the flow of blood to the brain. Some strokes are caused by bleeding in or around the brain from a burst blood vessel.

A stroke can happen at any time to anyone from the youngest of babies to the very elderly. Usually there is little or no warning so it is really important that If you see someone with any one of the tell-tale signs of a stroke, you need to Think FAST and dial 999.

What is FAST?
FAST requires an assessment of three specific symptoms of stroke.
  • Facial weakness - can the person smile? Has their mouth or eye drooped?
  • Arm weakness - can the person raise both arms?
  • Speech problems - can the person speak clearly and understand what you say?
  • Time - to call 999
If someone has failed any of these tests it is crucial to call 999. Stroke is a medical emergency and by calling 999 you can help someone reach hospital quickly and receive the early treatment they need. Prompt action can prevent further damage to the brain and help someone make a full recovery. Delay can result in death or major long term disabilities, such as paralysis, severe memory loss and communication problems.

Great spot by Mum and Dad mate, here's to a speedy recovery for your Sister. Good info and a top share.

Here's to a swift recovery Gaz. Excellent information for those that haven't had any experience of strokes.
Jues Aunt had a stroke a couple of months back. She's OK but as said the road to recovery begins.

Good to hear your sister got the help she needed in good time Gaz. Your parents were brilliant. Hope she recovers well. Please send our best wishes mate.

Tony.

Hope your sister make a speedy recovery Gaz, well spotted Mr & Mrs Hyde senior

We're glad everything turned out ok. Jill had a mild stroke a couple of years ago. She made a full recovery rather quickly. The scary thing though is that we have been told that people rarely only have one stroke unless the first one finishes you off.

As others have said, hope your sister gets well soon.

Glad that it was noticed so soon, as was the case with my HA 2/3 years ago I wish her well

Glad to see your parents were on the ball, every one should be aware of the symptoms and FAST, it has been well publicised but a reminder never does any harm.

All the best to your sister Gaz,

Agree with all the previous comments, catch any of these scary things early and the prognosis can be good.
Best wishes to your sister Gary for a speedy recovery x
