Strange rattling coming from engine!!!????

driving to the post office today and the car is rattling like crazy???

pull over to have a look at the engine .... walk around the front of the car





bonnet wasn't shut!

I've never understood why there are switches and lights on all the doors and boot/tailgate but not on the bonnet. Ok - one more thing to cost or go wrong but it would stop this kind of thing. The one thing you don't need is the bonnet flying open when you're driving

There is a switch on the bonnet Ian, for the alarm. You would have thought with the expertise BMW has at its disposal a warning light could have been incorporated on the dash somewhere

no warning lights for the doors though either.

saying that the z3 bonnet weighs about 400kg so no chance of it flipping up!

Oh it would flip up if the safety catch failed at high speed and the extra weight of it would cause severe damage. Happily you discovered what it was in good time Tim.

Doesn't need much of a vacuum to lift even something quite heavy. The curve on the bonnet is quite an aerofoil shape. Wouldn't want to be behind it even at 40mph should it decide to break free and flip up.

That thought occurred to me too. It would be the back of your head by the time its wrapped and up around the windscreen and over the top. Thwack! Stars!
