Got my chrome Hoogies (magnetic stone guards) a couple of weeks ago and am chuffed with them.

After the Scottish tour at the weekend, I removed them & washed the car.

I noticed that the guard on my passenger side had left a mark like condensation on the paintwork. After a polish etc it will not go.
I know that my passenger rear wing was replaced in 2002 and therefore does not have original paint, so it looks like this is the reason only that side has been affected.
I will take a picture, but it looks like the metallic in the paint has formed ripples and a haze. The external finish is still smooth and shiny and feels no different. (Cosmos black)
I have read up and one company selling magnetic advertising for cars qualifies their advert that it can only be fitted to original paintwork.
At least I can hide it by putting them back on, but maybe a warning to others.

When did you notice Andy?
Does it get any worse, or is that it?

About 6 months post respray mate. Not got any worse though. My respray (whilst good) was cheap done by a mate in a framed tent in his back garden. Get what you pay for I suppose.

Maybe its to do with the mettalic in the paint and as its new its not as cured as hard as the old paint causing the magnetic gaurds to react ?
Strange but a thought....

Hmm could be a reaction to something in paint or lacquer?
When cars are painted from factory arent the parts dipped in energised liquids to neutralise any charge they have before paint?
Hopefully it does not get any worse!? Mine is all original paint and stone chipped to death under neath so I never take them off!

I've just purchased a set from Dave, as they are magnetic is it at all possible to stick a clear plastic film (cut to size) that can be removed easily onto the body of the car and then place the magnetic guards on the plastic film - given that it will still stick?

This is interesting as I recently removed them to give car a good clean. I have found some of the top coat missing and signs of rust appearing. They have now gone garage shelf with other bits that will never see light again.

Like a clear vinyl wrap. I've heard some stories about how the guard can leave marks behind or damage the paint etc.

So if you stuck some vinyl wrap (cut to the size of the guard) onto the body of the car and stuck the guard on top of the wrap then surely it would create a barrier of sorts and prevent any damage to the paintwork on the car.

That's just me thinking ahead, I haven't received the guards yet =))=))

The magnetic advertising site I visited recommended removing them every night and cleaning.
In some cases it took the paint right off.

Again, I think this may only apply to non factory paintwork.

Mine have been on the car none stop for just over a year with no issues i just remove them to clean the car and wipe and dry them down before putting them back on.
Seems strange indeed :banghead:

My non original affected side was renewed 2002.
Other side is original and absolutely fine.

Could it have something to do with the fact that you're putting a magnet onto metallic paints that don't have sufficient clearcoat? Just wondering? JIM

Something like this?
Surely must be a non factory paint issue?
Mine have been on since April and the car came with the top part so that bit even longer.
I clean the car once a week/fortnight and remove them to do so before a quick Polish.
