I'm thinking about getting my steering wheel re-upholstered by that bloke Mr Royal who seems to be very good, but I'm not that mechanically minded so can anyone kindly tell me what is entailed? Are there any electrical or airbag issues to watch out for? Are there a lot of things to undo to get it off?

It's not a tricky procedure at all, takes about 30 minutes or so. Couple of screws to remove the face, then unplug the air bag and a couple of screws hold that in. Then a big socket on the big nut which holds it on, wheel pulls off. You may want a friend to sit in the drivers seat and hold the wheel steady while undoing the nut so you don't put pressure on the steering lock.

Fitting is basically reversing the procedure.

Just make sure you have the wheel straight before you take it off so you have a reference for fitting the new one, otherwise it will be off centre and incredibly annoying.

I'm sure I've missed something like making sure you take the keys out the ignition or the likes. There will be a torque value for the nut I would imagine, but I just applied a "sensible amount" on mine ;)

@Mnbrennan and @Rha have had it done and the chap lives round the corner from me

Disconnect Neg batt terminal first make sure the batt post is insulated cos the short neg wire tries it's hardest to spring back to the post, re connect last then try your horn. Recovering thicker (double padded) is really worth doing IMO makes the wheel look better and much more cummfy. Good luck.

Do it - you really will not regret it.... I have had one on my //M for 18 months or so now and last week I got this one below with the thicker padding as discussed:

Compared to the old one :
What's that funny badge in the centre of the steering wheel ?;)

Thought so!;)

Whilst you're at at, have you considered having your gear knob, gearstick gaiter and handbrake done to match. You can choose your fabric and stitching colour to suite. Very effective in my opinion....

Before you pull on the steering wheel to take it off, you might want to make sure the nut is at least two whole threads on the shaft. Steering wheels have a habit of letting go suddenly, if the nut isn't there to stop it, it could fly off and break your nose.
