Thats right. My Z has a squeaky bum issue. Riding at low speeds i can clearly hear a squeaking sound from the rear of the car. I believe it is specifically the driverside rear. The elongation of the sound and frequency due to the rotation speed of the wheel, leads me to believe its mostly likely going to be due to the rear brakes in some way.

So, upon inspecton of the car, the rear brake setup is looking somewhat coroded. Decent amount of rust on both sides. Discs don't look great and the condition of the brake pads is unknown as of yet. Looking through the paperwork for the car, there hasn't been receipts for discs and pads. Whilst driving, i feel a disparity in the balance of the brakes under firmer braking. The car moved slighly as if one side is slowing down quicker than the other.
I think this is the cars way of telling me its time to spend some money on her...

I am assuming a new brake setup is going to solve the problem of the squeak. However, is it possible that the squeak could be something unrelated the the brakes?

Perhaps wear of the rear arm bushings that could be dry and cracked could possibly be the reason for the squeak. The squeak is effected by rotation though, which makes me think its less likely.

Another guess could be wheel size. Car is on 17" BMW style 103's running 225/45/17. I know 17" were an option on some z's but could the fit of the wheel cause rubbing? Visiually tyres seem fine.

I'm pretty confident that im going to get new discs and pads for the rear anyway. I would be surprised if they would pass for MOT. That and it doesn't look nice. I've been of the impression that, good braking comes from the pads and the fluid and that the grilled-and-grooved discs percieved performance is near enough negligible? Any recommendation for new discs and pads for 98' 1.9? Has anyone had this carried out and if so what's a good price from a gagrage for the job?

Any thoughts on diagnosis and parts are appreciated.

Before you commit to having any work done at a garage, see if there's anyone near you who would be willing to help/do it for you. For instance if you were near me, that would be me :)

Just looking through the pelican parts page that was shared. It's within my capabilites and i think I'll probably enjoy it too now that it doesn't seem too difficult a job. I'm sure the oem jack will suffice.

An impact driver is a very versatile bit of kit. TENG TOOLS make a good one and they sponsor Wheeler Dealers. It's what I have.

I have an old Draper. Still got the 4 original bits too. I lost it once but found it in our dogs bed =))

He must have thought it was a chrome bone, and it's also probably one of the reasons he's broke his front canines

Translating from German ebay to see if i can get a set with discs pads and sensors for a good price.

Any thoughts on the squeak?

Could the bearings be the cause of a squeak or is it most likely to the brakes? I thought bearings was more of a whine...

I also had a squeaky rear, ended up being down to a worn top mount the best I could determine.

You can save a lot of money doing the job yourself, however, invest spome of it in the proper tools.
DO NOT rely on the OEM jack for this type of work. Buy or borrow some basic axle stands (2 tonne stands on Amazon £13 a pair). Don't bother with folding stands they are not as stable. You will also need a 7mm male hex socket bit to remove the calipers and they are not usually in socket sets.
Enjoy doing repairs like this, you learn a lot, but please do it safely!

I can confirm, if everything is in good order ie the bolts are not too rusty/rounded off etc it should be straight forward. I have barely done anything car repair wise and over the last few weeks I have been changing my brake discs and pads (and even handbrake shoes) with good success. It’s also very satisfying when complete, knowing that you’ve not paid a garage £300+ to fix!
