#ZedShed Splitting 108 rims

One of the side jobs for today is splitting a set of 108s for @Oldguysrule’s Z4 project. I’ve heard bad things about splitting rims and honestly seems y’all making it hard work for yourselves however you do it. Split in two with zero broken bolts and ready to go for refurb on Monday. There was one broken bolt however, but as the head was just glued in to the hole and that doesn’t count.

The bolt holes had been filled with WD40 earlier in the week so it got chance to soak in.

M8 multi spline socket on our ratchet breaker. I didn’t need the breaker for maximum force, just because it’s easier to control the force through it than a shorter

Only one bolt seemed to suffer from some corrosion in the thread but really not a problem. To separate the face from the barrel I laid the rim face down with a block of wood to lift it off the bench. Small block of wood on the back of the spoke and a couple of hits on that with a nylon hammer and away she came.

Do you have mark the rim and centre piece to ensure reassembled wheel goes back together as it was prior to stripping?
 
I didn’t and I can’t see a reason to. I loosened the bolts using a 4” spline tool in an 1/2” socket style adapter on a 2 ft ratchet, one at a time while the car was was sitting on the tyre in the work car park over several lunch breaks. Once I had loosened, and re tightened all 80 bolts I took the wheels off, removed the tyres and split them using the same method Gary used. With the car sitting on the wheel all I had to worry about was keeping the socket square in the bolt head. I rounded bolt had the head drilled off and the stump removed using heat and Vise grips.

I bought a set of style 42s 723 &724 a few weeks back for cheap. Facias have a little surface corrosion and the barrel inners are pretty crispy so good to see some wd40 does the trick without sheering the bolt.

Still on the search for a 17x9j.
 
I did mine a few years ago and didn't have any problems get the wheel at chest height on bench and use a sliding t bar with spline bit give all bolts a good tap with soft hammer 9n spline bit and tighten loosen technique . Mine need doing again sometime as the lacquer has cracked I probably do them over winter
