I can't see a lot of point in having a spare, if you have a passenger where do you put the punctured tyre and wheel, I have a puncture kit, failing that its RAC

52 years, one puncture in rear wheel of Zed spare wheel used. The hole in the tyre was so large that tyre weld would not have worked. Punctured wheel would go in the boot with th lid open but you need a cord to tie the lid down. Perhaps I've been extra lucky.

Between the two of us and probably over 1.5m miles driven over 40+ years I’ve only ever had to do one roadside change as far as I recall.
Done a fair few on the drive though.

As far as space is concerned, unless it’s someone really special sat in the passenger seat think it would be a taxi for them

Just removed mine as the wheels was rusty anyway and the frame was needing a tidy up so removed that as well and I normally have the mrs and a boot full of stuff no place for the wheel even If I did get a flat, also it catches mud and gravel and removing it would let the area breath and the reduction in weight is not insignificant as my leg will testify as it fell on it while removing the damn thing! and it was well outta date

p.s I cut of the 2 round hangers and painted them then refitted to block the holes ;)

Just replaced the tyre ( 20 year old and unused ) and had the wheel and metal cage powder coated and painted the plastic carrier, got carried away while I was cleaning the underside for MOT. Passed MOT no advisories.

Just hauled mine out for a clean and checked the date code
Entered DOT code: 459
Date of production: 1999-11-08
Your tire is 19 years 4 months 14 days old
To look at it its like new and never used, rubber seems harder than it should though, probably best to replace it.
Will have a look at whats available.

I’ll keep mine for extreme emergencies only and keep an inflation kit in the boot

Local Tyre shop comes in at £59.60 for the Continential CST 17 Tyre fitted. Cheaper than Black Circles.

Picked up a new spare wheel on ebay. Rim in almost pristine condition and tyre although old has never been used.
And much better condition that my old one.

The old one will be going to the tip as its not holding the tyre pressure ( hopefully wont get charged for disposal !!).

Decided to check my spare wheel yesterday, for the first time since I purchased the car about 3 years ago. Looks a bit worse for wear.

Much of the rust is surface; most worrying is the welded joints (didn't realise this is a two piece wheel) have rusted badly and there is corrosion around the stud holes. Tyre is unused and maintained pressure, but 22 years old now. Wheel and tyre are scrap I think?
Interestingly, the carrier frame paint and metal was near perfect when cleaned off with WD 40.
Car must now be over 10lbs lighter without the wheel. Not sure where to go next, but there is no way I would fit this wheel to the car.

Mine is in the garage. My exhaust doesn't allow the carrier to be fitted so I would have to put it in the boot. Actual repairable punctures seem quite rare compared to splits caused by potholes or obstructions in the road around here. We had visitors coming last week and their special edition Fiesta hit a pothole. No spare wheel and the slime just squirted out again. Rare tyre size - we're in mid Kent and the nearest tyre was in basildon......

Hmm I dont have one, no carrier in the M, also never really saw the point of them, if there is two of you in the car (as there usally is as these cars are now mostly pleasure vehicles) what do you do with the puntured wheel?? And before anyone says the passenger can carry it bare in mind a Z3 passenger was killed doing just that last year when the car was involved in an accident. o_O ditch the spares I say and carry a couple of bottles of slime and join a recovery organisation :thumbsup:

I then removed cut the two bolts with rubber seals, sanded, painted and refitted. Now have a can of tyre weld and 12v compressor.

One option that I have never heard anyone mention is (and I know they are not without issues/problems), however, is...... runflats? Anyone?
