Just removed my spare wheel carrier cage from my 99 1.9l Z3 and thought I might (grit) blast it then powder coat it in order to improve its resistance to rust.
Only snag is there is a black plastic part? or plastic covering?? where the wire clip that holds the carrier temporarily in the boot (before further securing with the hex nut etc) engages.
Question - will powder coating at ca 180 C damage this plastic part / covering ? Has anybody else powder coated their carrier and was it adversely affected by the heat process?
Many thanks in advance for your feedback
Kind Regards
Brian

I removed the spare wheels and carriers from my Z3 s. They are a waste space as in the event of a puncture there is nowhere to put the offending wheel.

Hello Z Victor 1, Zedonist may have a solution to the dreaded punctured wheel and what do I do now?

Hello Brian

I’m not sure which plastic piece you mean, I have had my cradle blasted and powder coated, no problem at all, looks great. You do have to replace the sticky backed sponge rubber on the frame however.

Thanks Dakar - I thought it was made of plastic as it is black coloured and just assumed it was - it is the cone shaped piece that the wire "clips" grab when lifting the wheel carrier into the boot floor. This black cone piece is an integral part of teh captive bolt that the flexi wire is attached to - I hope I'm making myself clear but I guess a piccy will help so will try today
Thanks to others for their comments too - - I guess having "her who must be obeyed at all times" would be happier cradling a dirty punctured tyre than just sitting by the roadside in the pouring rain :) . After 40 years of marriage the poor lass has had to put up with a lot !!!:)
Kind Regards
Brian

Never really thought about it but as mentioned above the cradle only carries a space saver ,so nowhere to put the punctured standard wheel especially if you have a passenger on board!

Mine was removed but the misses still has one in her car. Not sure what happened but she lost the whole inner sidewall and the spare saved the day last month.

I keep a can of sealer in my car but it wouldn't have helped with this. While the spare was out I cleaned and painted it as it was showing its age.

Wow !!! I hope nobody got hurt - as they say " every picture tells a story"
On this forum, recently, but a different thread I asked about tyres as I have just bought a 99 1.9 l Z3. I got some very good feedback so I have purchased a brand new set.
Kind Regards
Brian
p.s. Following the feedback, have now instructed the powder coaters to strip and coat the frame so will show a photo in the New Year when back from the workshop.

I read "every puncture tells a story" weird the way the brain works!

Just had another spare carrier done this week. They look great. But the process will find out any thin sheet metal.
