I have been trying locate a new tyre for my Spare after finding signs of deterioration. After getting no replies when I have asked what the tyre date code is, ( from various ebay suppliers), I contacted Continental who were the manufacturers of the T125/90R15 96M. CST17

Just got a reply.......

Hi Malc,
Than for your quick responding.

The T125/90R15 96M TL CST 14 we stopped produce Europe in 2001 and the T125/90R15 96M TL CST17 we stopped produce in 1997.

I hope this helps.

This means that any tyre offered as new, really means unused....but still 21 years old !
A bit past their ‘ best before date ‘

As I have ordered one of the Kia pumps from Andy, I may now end up removing it all from under the car, and getting a motorbike tyre repair kit as I know these work really well as a temporary fix.

Apparently, Michelin did make a spacesaver in the same size but had no reply so far, and could well have also stopped production.

Obviously never had a spare in the M just a pump, I carry 2 bottles of sludge with me just so I can get off any motorways and done 4 euro trips and 4 Scotland trips with out any issues, but I had a bolt go through a rear tyre in the Beacons once and that was a trip home on an AA truck. That said the last 2 daily drivers haven't had spares either. I do miss a spare especially on the continent if I'm honest

You are probably going to find that Michelin will give you the same answer.
As you will probably find the size of space saver fitted to our cars model specific so as conti and mich would probably see very little units in after sales so produced units would be for new builds only.
Check with Maxxis and Hankook see if they maybe do anything as they both make and supply a lot of the current car models space savers.
Stephen .

Just for talking sake say you find a tyre fit it etc .
Then say few months later your out with the mrs miles from home get a blow out on rear tyre so you put on the space saver just out of curiosity where are you planning on putting the rear wheel .

If memory serves me right I think @Brian4 found a space saver from another model that would do the job.

In answer to Steve's question re the punctured wheel, it looks like a taxi is required.

Tony.

Not that I have actually tried it yet.....but thinking I could put it in the open boot and hold the lid down on it with some bungee cords.

I was lucky enough to find a basically new one from another BMW, unfortunately, I can't remember the model. Picked it up for around £10-15 if I remember right and when comparing the specs of the tyre itself it looked identical.

On the tyre it will say DOT, then some numbers, then either a 3 or 4 digit code in an oval ring. This is the actual date code of the tyre.

If not you will have to go up to a 16" rim and 125 80 16

Best thing is one of these after the punctured one is deflated .

I have the spare tyre bag .
But I got to tell you my wife would not be best pleased about having a 17" alloy with a 245/40/17 tyre sitting on her lap.

@Mazza Just bought a new continental space saver tyre last week off a local dealer here's a picture of the date stamp and it fitted to my nice newly painted wheel. Just to add I also keep 2 x puncture cans and a plug in compressor in the boot . Oh and a good recovery policy. So the new tyre will probably only be out when it's getting cleaned.=))
