SOS!

I hate to say this Dawn , but having had both of my cars suffer from exactly this problem , the only way you will ever get it fully dry …. And making sure the floor itself is ok is to remove at least the rear carpet. For the sake of the cost of a few clips …it’s a far better option.
The rear carpet Malc? Have you any progress pics in any of your threads that I can look at please?

Yes there’s a couple of threads on the forum….but no idea how you do a link !!!
Basically Seats out, rear storage out, centre console out, and the rear carpet can be lifted out….giving better access to be able to lift the front carpet and see how wet it is underneath.
Taking the front carpet out was a pain !!!

Are your threads posted under general banter or something else Malc? If you can give me their titles, I will search in these to see if I can find them.

The carpet goes well under the dashboard…does he dash have to come out and what about the pedals?

No. Only the lower plastics incl. glovebox.
Thanks Robert. I’ll take some pics and would you mark up what’s got to be removed please? Or if it’s easier for you to take pics and mark up please do because I can’t visual this.

You’re probably best off studying post #110 of my wiring loom thread.

Thanks Robert. How did you get on with the trim: did you have breakages removing any?

@mrscalex Do the pedals stay in-situ and the carpet is removed around them Robert?

The accelerator pedal has to be unclipped at the base. I don’t recall ever breaking any clips. But the caps on the screws I find you do more damage levering them off than going straight through with a screwdriver insitu. They are about £2 ea so I just flatten the damage and put back.

Dawn …. If you look at my thread Bognor Lean-to project, ( from page 2) I did put a lot of info and pictures as to taking out the front carpet

Thanks Robert. This certainly is very helpful. My problem is I don’t have a garage and I’m thinking who does that I could ask to loan while this work happens. The other issue is the indie mechanic I use who is brilliant is very concerned that my car would be in his place for so long that it would stop him doing other jobs so he’s lose money. I totally understand this. So I either have to try to find someone I trust with my car (!) or do this myself. I’m not phased by me having a go. I did take off the rollover bars ages ago and back on fine. It just looks a massive job 🙁

Thanks Marc. I’ll have a search.

Well you’d probably want a weekend to get it out. And a weekend to put it back if you’ve never done it before. I guess I could do it in half that time having done it on a few occasions. To me it’s straightforward enough but it’s not a 2 minute job. To be honest I can understand your mechanic not wanting to do it. And I think it would prove expensive for you.

Malc: it looks like it took your car 17 days for the carpet to dry out or were you doing other things inbetween? @Mazza

A dehumidifier will work well for this, preferably in a garage though.

It did take a long time to completely dry out....and to be honest I haven't even put back in yet.....no rush !!!

I left it on some trestles just dripping !!

I had an idea last night which I know sounds “outside the box”…drilling drain holes into the underside. To release the water.

Hmmm. Reminds me of an Austin Healey I used to own. It was fine under acceleration, but braking filled my shoes up. Gets a bit wearing after a while.:( Still, soft-tops, gotta love 'em, eh?

Yes I put it inside. With the power flex under door with door closed. It’s tight but okay. It took around a week from memory. And that’s a powerful bit of kit especially in that space. It’s that rubber backing that just soaks it up like a sponge.
Hi Robert. Is it the 7L version one you have used in your Z or the 20L one? Did you place it on the floor of your car?

7L. And that's powerful enough to dry a large room out. We have several round the family but they are all minor/newer variations of each other - the one I have here is DD122FW Simple. They were all £125-£150 but it's been a few years since the last one I bought. I just checked on their website and I believe this is the latest model at £155. It looks pretty much identical.

Just place it on the floor. Most important thing is to ensure it can't fall over.

A decent dehumidifier is a great invest for any home regardless of having a Z3. It's one of those things when you need it all of a sudden, eg leak, you are so glad you have it.

If you don't mind 'refurbished like new' (apparently ex-demo & unused returns) then this is a good deal. In fact I just bought an additional one for a new permanent requirement.
