surely the 'electric valve' behind the cylinder head is the solenoid valve which cuts off hot water to the heater . . .

It is blanked at the manifold mate 🙂

@Lee It’s those 3 (1 big, 2 little) right hand rear side of the inlet manifold yeah?. Replaced all of those as they were perished. Cheers

The fact that Rich's cold start issues also coincide with when that smog pump would be running makes me think, check the blanking plate and gasket on the side of the engine and also get eyes on the back of that manifold blanks plus that valve.
