So why did you go for a ZED?

I was wondering why you guys decided to buy a ZED?

My reason was purely financial... I live in Portsmouth and work in Reigate, Surrey, I'm lucky to work for a large company and have what I think is a good job... However they do expect me to turn up... So with one car I was in trouble if it needed a service or repairs so decided to buy a spare car... I decided on the Z3 because they are not massively expensive and probably done most of its devaluation, so its value would stay quite stable...

Anyway I found my ZED at a dealer in Manchester so popped up there (500 mile round trip) for a test drive... To be truthful I was not overwhelmed with it but logically it was a really good buy... Well a week later it was mine...

So last summer I drove it around at weekends and evenings and strangely became very fond of it and now can't see me selling it for a long time, well unless the newly found desire for a Z3 M becomes overwhelming- hehe.

I had decided to opt out of my company car scheme and trade in a 118i convertible which I had acquired through unfortunate circumstances. A guy at work was looking at Zeds and he is very knowledgable having previously owned Caterham, Lotus and Porsche. I went for a look and a test drive and was hooked....and my husband didn't take much persuading.

We were looking to upgrade from our Alfa Spider and we were originally looking for an Audi TT, but we went to this garage that had a range of 2 seater sports and the missus even hough we had not mentioned the BMs just loved the look of the zed so we went home scoured the net looked at a few different priced ones and specs saw the 3.0 Z3 and the missus fell inlove with it there and then and bought it. Paid around £1500 more than what we were planning on spending. Now she will only have a zed doesnt like the look of the other makes

A very sad tragedy happened in my family ...... :(
And it makes you think differently .......
And I thought to my self I'd like a sports car :)
So we started looking ...... :)
The first Z we had was a Z3 , lovely Z it was light blue with cream leather interior , ( it will always have a place in my heart )
Well one day Alan and Richard ( Macca ) got me to sit in his Z4 ( the red rocket ) and within a month or so we ended up with the Z4 we have now :)
Lovely looking Z ;)
Pleasure to drive and we both luv it , the Z hasn't got a name yet only Z =))
I think we had the Z3 for about 2 years and we're now had the Z4 about 3 years :)
So that's my story as to why we got our Z ;)
Happy memories and happy days ;)

I had a Celica Series 6, and wanted a change, My wife already had an A4 so wanted something small a search of the internet showed that the Z3 was within the price I wanted to pay, so one came up in Wigan, Took a run out to see it and test drive it, After the test drive decided I wanted it and funny enough the guy was looking for a Celica, so struck a deal, he gave me £2000 for my Celica (best offer I had was £1000) so gave him the £1,700 difference and came home with my first Zed. Happy Days.

Some very many years ago I used to work with a guy called @board (and still do many years later!). James decided that he wanted to get an ///M Roadster, and then stupidly let me have a drive of it. It was at the time the quickest car I'd ever driven, and left me quite pale afterwards. 105 in third, good lord that thing really moved. That fuelled my urge to get one.

Occasionally when his M or company 318 was in for a service he'd get some nice cars, and on another occasion he turned up in the office in a 2.2 Z3. We bundled off to site in it roof down, fighting for the keys on a rather extended out of the way direction.

Being a family man at the time all my available fund were diverted to fripperies like food and clothes for the kids (and wife), so no way I could get myself a hobby car. Just had to pootle around in my company provided turbo dismal Mundaneo. Then the story took a brighter turn and I got divorced, and when we sold the ridiculous house that I couldn't afford the mortgage on let alone food, I bought my first Z3 with the settlement money.

So to recap... Drove James' M, got divorced and bought a Z3. =))

I was a Datsun 240z and 260z guy as I love the shape and driver's position. I really didn't look at the Zeds because they were out of my price range. Well my wife fell ill and I have been looking after her for so long that she insisted I buy a sports car for myself as a present. Started looking around and got hooked on the Zeds! I got the best one I could afford being a 2.2 with 99k on the clock, auto, and my favorite color so I had to have it. I did pay a few thousand more than I should have but what the heck, I love this car and I drive it every day.

As I said to a Newbie, in a welcome note, before Zed I had/have only oldtimers, most part convertibles. In my country obviously, before '89, it was impossible, for an average person, to own a modern convertible! Seven years ago, we decided that we need a modern car for road trips in Europe. And I start to search....after a while I realized that I'm not able to spend the money on a normal car (!) and wished to have for the mentioned purpose a two seater , convertible.....More searches and the best choice was the Z3.
I always have been/ will be a fan of the 328 (1936), a dream too far.........:shy:
I made a test of the driving position (because some roadster are really too small/ narrow for 1.85 m driver's height!) and being completely satisfied, I focused on the desired Zed. In six months I got the car from Germany and since, never wiped the smile from my face and heart!
I wished a 2.8  but as in my country such car is prohibitive (very high taxes for cars over 2 litres!) , I voted for the Massive M44 and we became instantly very good friends.
It was supposed to be a car to share with my two sons, but suddenly I became very possessive and they wisely gave up! :arghh:
Very happy with the car especially it's related to summer, sun and new places and peoples!:)

Sarah has always been the one in our house that owns the car,I get the bike. While I was a bit poorly we took quite a few days just driving in her car 300zx even though it was a bit of a show car. After about 18 months I was still here and starting to feel a bit better I thought I would get something a bit more practical for what we were doing.I always fancied a Zsince one over took me on the way to Rhayader ,a lovely dark green one.The Boston green 2.8 was the first one I'd driven the first one I'd seen close up when it comes to cars and bikes I'm no good at buying with my head so it came home with me:).I got picture no sound when Sarah saw what I'd bought, then she drove itand declared that it would be perfect for her! That was my excuse for getting the M

Very long story as published in the ZSCCA's Cruizin' Newz.
My Z3 Story

Well, my story goes back to the spring of 1999. I was a plucky 23 year old who was going to get a late graduation present from my parents. At the time I was an avid GM fan and had owned many Chevy Cavaliers and assorted GM “J” bodies. I was really sold on a model year 2000 dark blue Cavalier Z24 coupe. That was also the year my parents ordered a brand spanking new 2000 e46 323Cic for my mother, fully loaded with all the toys. I couldn’t comprehend paying $50K+ for any vehicle, extolling the virtues that one doesn’t need to spend vast amounts of cash for a fun ride. Can you believe I was crazy enough to turn down a Z3 roadster my dad was trying to sell me on? Anyways, I took delivery of my Cavalier and was as happy as a clam until my mom’s e46 was finally ready for delivery. One test drive in the car and I thought that the 4 cyl in my Z24 was not enough for me.

After owning the Z24 for 6 short months, I traded it in on a late model Pontiac Grand Prix GT coupe. That was a beautiful car, but still no match for my mom’s 323Ci (which by the way had less horsepower then my Grand Prix.) I kept the Grand Prix for 2 more years while saving enough pennies to buy my very own BMW.

When the time had come I found a CPO’d 1998 323is coupe in titanium silver over dove gray interior, it was an absolutely beautiful machine that was a joy to drive.

2 years later I had an itch for a convertible, and traded my trusty 323is in on a 328iC. I owned that car for 5 years. (2003-2008) It was a blast to drive top down, and gave me 5 years of mostly trouble free service. In January 2008 I decided I should get something that was at least manufactured in this decade, so I traded my 328iC on a 2001 325Ci coupe. The e46 coupe body is highly attractive and sporty looking at every angle, and it’s driving dynamics make it a bonafide pleasure to drive.

As winter turned to spring, and the weather got warmer, I feared I made a huge mistake. I kept looking for the retractable roof switch, which my coupe simply couldn’t provide. Friends told me to “just open the windows and sunroof.” By that statement, I could tell they just didn’t get it. The search was on once again. I immediately started scouring all the online sites to find my perfect convertible. I was looking for e36 M3 convertibles, and e46 325/330 convertibles. I found an estoril blue M3 convertible at a local Lexus dealer, so I called. Unfortunately, it had been sold that day, so back to the drawing board. Searching and searching, all the e46 convertibles I found either had too much mileage or were really beat, and e36 M3’s were sort of hard to come by, and I wasn’t going to get another non M3 323/328 e36. At this point I started considering the Z3, after all, my best friend has had a boston green 1.9L for 6 years and he still loved it. His motto is “the only way you’ll get my Z is to pry it from my cold dead fingers!” HAHA, there has to be some reason why he says that.

Whilst searching Autotrader, I found the car I wanted. A 2000 (4/00 manufacture date) Z3 2.3 roadster in Dakar Yellow over black. Just from the pictures I wanted that car so bad. I immediately called the dealer and inquired about it. The salesman told me that the owner of the dealership was driving it at the shore and it should be back in a few days. I told him that I am very very interested in the car, and to please let me know when it’s back because if I like it, he had a guaranteed sale, he said he’d call me, I thanked him, and hung up.

Day 1 passes, Day 2 passes, Day 3 is halfway over and still no call. Being the anxious person I am I called the salesman back to inquire. He told me that he hadn’t forgotten me and that in the past few days they have received quite a few calls about the car, and that I had “first dibbs” because I called first. He then proceeded to tell me the car would be in later that day around 4:30, so if I wanted to come see it then, it would be there. I agreed, and the rest is history!

I love my Z3 and thinking back, if I had accepted my dad’s offer, I could have bought this car new! Either way, it was a great journey, and one I wouldn’t change at all.

* Love the Z so much I bought a second one to keep the first one company in 2013. :)

Not so many people struggled so much for their Zed! Great story!:)
Why we never listen to our parents?
Great combo for the Dakar yellow!
But I agree, the best investment for the Zed is the second Zed!:D

I was getting bored with the fully loaded Merc I had, it seemed like you were not driving it, it was driving you.
I had admired the Z in my buddies show room for the past couple of months and thought, why not.
No money involved, just swapped keys and paperwork.
He got a much younger car back, worth more with not a mark on it (I had bought it from him) and I got a much bigger smile.

P.S. I (bought) it on a December morning and left it in the showroom due to a load of snow and that afternoon, two other people had come in to buy it because of the hardtop.

In July 1997 I was in Boston, Mass on holiday at my brother's place (He has lived there since 1976).
The Z3s were newly launched and I saw quite a few and the shape and looks really appealed to me. At the time I was unaware that there were built in the US. I thought I would very much like to own this car but it was totally unpractical for family life and I pushed the desire to the back of my mind.
Whilst holidaying again in Aruba 2013 I spotted this lovely car sparkling in the sun and my desire returned.
Having just reached retirement age I decided that this would be an ideal present to myself as a reward for working so hard over the last fifty years. On returning back home I started the search for a Z3 after obtaining the necessary approval from the Commander in Chief. Eventually luck came my way and I was fortunate to acquire a 1999, low mileage 1.9 M44 in extremely good condition and it came with a brand new hood.
I suppose this is a dream come true for me although it took sixteen years to become reality.
Now being retired proper I intend to drive this lovely car as much as I can with the top down! It gives so much pleasure.
A well used phrase on this forum is 'it puts a smile on my face' and I am no exception. I admire it every day and I regularly clean and polish it which shows off it's almost blemish free paintwork.
For me it is definitely a thing of beauty.
MM. Happy man.:)

I bought my Z3 July 2012, having researched the car very little, but new the engine and bodywork on a BMW, in the main, would be fairly sound. I believe the Z3 is the best value reliable used sports car on the road at the moment. I was looking for a 2.8 and there were none to be had in Northern Ireland a few months prior to my purchase. I spotted one in Scotland, which looked good in photographs. Following numerous questions to the sellar via email, I made the decision to purchase the Z3 without a visual inspection. However, I failed to ask the seller, in detail, the condition of the car's bodywork.

I allowed myself 12 hours to pick up the car and bring it home. I booked a flight to Inverness from Belfast City Airport and a boat ticket from Troon in Scotland, back to Larne in Northern Ireland later in the day. I took a packed lunch and a few snacks and £3400 cash. I felt very uncomfortable going to meet a total stranger with so much cash! The flight from Belfast was delayed by one hour and didn't leave until 2:00 pm. I had planned the trip to allow for casual driving on the return journey down the M9 to the ferry in Troon, but due to the flight delay and the time it took to complete the purchase, I was pressed for time to make it to the ferry. It was chucking it down from my arrival in Inverness for the rest of my time spent in Scotland. I didn't get a chance to visually inspect the bodywork! At least the softtop wasn't leaking! I drove down the M9 at 65/70 mph with the brakes binding, but didn't realise this until I got on to the ferry with literally minutes before gate closure. I arrived home just after midnight - what a journey! However, the car drove like a dream and I felt really good driving this car, considering the brakes were binding. The following morning I inspected the bodywork and I was fairly happy. The interior though was a bit tired looking. Two and a half years later with some tlc on bodywork, interior, servicing and mods, the car, in my opinion, looks exceptional and drives perfectly! I would sell my daily driver before I would sell my Z3 and I love my daily driver! What a car my Z3 has turned out to be!

My story has been told several times over in various threads and it's delivery was celebrated like the birth of one's first child. Trinity, my then 8 yr old granddaughter came to me one day suggesting we buy a project car. Either a Z3 or Ford F150 pickup. Having just retired after 40 yrs at Canadapost the budget was pretty small. Priced out Zeds in NA and found them way over what I could afford, so started investigating importing from another country and what our gov't regs were. The Z3 fit the must be 15 yrs old minimum so checked out European sources for LHD. Still too rich so hit eBay UK. Found a 97 1.9 in a colour Trinity loved( because there were no pink ones available) and contacted the owner. The auction ended before I could come anywhere close to sorting through the red tape. Well after a month of getting myself up to speed and not finding anything that grabbed me to buy I contacted the PO and found they had a deposit on the car but the person hadn't come back so it was again for sale. Negotiations began but the owner had a heart attach. Eventually, we did get things sorted and a valet service to decontaminate the car through Chris at Summit a forum member. Sean sent me 153 pics of the service as he progressed which showed me the car was rust free but needed tires and a hood. The car was finally picked up and put on the ship to come to Canada where my friend cleared customs for me and stored the car while I found a co to transport it to my home in the middle of Canada. I've left out lots of details to keep this to the Reader's Digest size version. The car will become Trinity's at Graduation so she has something to work towards as well as learning how to maintain and work on it in the meantime. JIM

Maurice, don't be ashamed to admit you lusted after a MX5. They are a superb little car to drive.
There are countless Z owners out there (Me included) who's first experience of an open top car was the little Mazda.

I harboured an ambition to drive a convertible to the South of France, & managed it in the MX5. It is a holiday memory I will cherish.

HOWEVER the MX was an aperitif for the main course - The M car I currently own. I owned a number of standard BMW models & always marvelled at the 'event' that was driving a BMW.
I remember back in 2006 when the Z4M was first released, I used to follow home an Interlagos blue Z4MR when I finished work. I loved the car & in my opinion the Z4M ticked all the boxes that some of the other M car models lacked. From that day on I promised myself I would buy one when I retired.
Well that day arrived back in October 2014, and my Titanium Silver M sits quietly awaiting the first shots of spring, whilst gently sipping from the CTEK battery charger...role on Spring.

I have one more motoring 'Want' to fill & that is to source an older sister for the Z4MR, in the shape of a six cylinder Z3 - watch this space :)
