Just learnt that police will be prosecuting all motorists who venture past lane closure signs (red X on gantry) because they've just realised on the smart parts of our motorway system the emergency services are getting held up when needed to attend accidents etc because drivers are venturing past these "Must Comply" signs. I totally agree with police but have a look at something I wrote in response (on f/book) to this problem earlier this year after learning nearly 40 lives have been lost due to rear end collisions on these so called Smart Motorway sections.

One of the worst money saving exercises any government has ever made. This outcome is so obvious with all the idiots on the roads who have never had any training in/on m/way driving. M/way driving lessons should be made mandatory after passing driving test and the hard shoulder brought back everywhere. M/transport on the day says he was ill advised at the time the decision was made, so obvious that he hasn't had much experience of motorway driving same for his advisers. Police have to shoulder some blame as they must have been too quiet at the time knowing/foreseeing this problem. Makes the Smart part the most dangerous part IMO especially if you have children with you.

At motorway speeds there does need to a “safe” refuge.
