I decided to give my Zed a complete lube change today! As I didn't know when (or if) the diff or gearbox oils where changed last I though I'd have a go. My Zed is a 98 and done nearly 69k. Well I'm glad I did because what came out was, well, erm, pretty muddy! I am guessing it the same oil that was put in on the production line. To be honest I was surprised at the condition of the oil (pics included) So if any of you were thinking of doing this before the good weather comes, I would highly recommend it.
The contents of the bucket are from both diff and gearbox.

Was the gearbox low on oil, there doesn't seem a lot of oil in that bucket?

Definitely improved the gear changes, much smoother especially selecting 1st.

No its a big bucket, I checked both levels before I drained the units and could touch oil in both, the gearbox holds surprisingly little oil, just over the litre., Likewise the diff holds quite a lot, about 1.6 litres.

Nice Ramps, good for cleaning underneath!

Mike
I'm lucky I have use of the ramps at one of our depots where my office is based, also has good workshop facilities as seen in other posts, lucky boy! Having the ramps etc is a godsend if I'm honest.

Never did like the idea of "Filled for life" just doesn't make any sense to me. Even if the units don't loose any oil through leaks the lubricants must deteriorate over time, and that oil could be almost 18 years old! :(

I should get mine done to.
Word of advice, buy an oil syringe if you don't have an oil pump, you cant get anywhere near the fill points with anything else. Oh and wear gloves gear oil stinks!! lol

There is only one problem: if you have a 25% limited slip diff , you need XJ oil, not XO, or was it XF ...because the XJ is a Jag...!?
I'll check the can tomorrow.
And by the way the diff oil doesn't stinks, it's just the "perfume" of crude oil!

You definitely need one if you have an Auto box, they hold 7 ltr. and you have to fill while it's running !

Some time back Southernboy had a thread (sure it was on here) about how he filled his gearbox using a length of pipe through the gear lever hole. Will be trying this way one day soon (still too cold here to be messing about underneath the car).
